Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Nursing emerges from the challenge to meet the manpower needs for quality health care locally, nationally, and globally. The role and scope of the Department of Nursing are reflected in the characteristics of selected learning environments and their ability to enhance individual productivity in a changing society. The Department of Nursing provides essential service to improve the quality of life for all people through quality educational program research and scholarly endeavors, and community service.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Academic Counselor will provide consistent advisement for all prospective and pre-nursing students. The employee will collaborate with the Director of Student Support Services and Nursing Student Services for planning, coordinating, and evaluating Student Support Services. This includes recruitment, pre-admission tracking and advising, admissions, orientation, registration, financial aid, graduation and management of student information systems. This position will assist with formation and maintenance of policies related to student admissions and advisement.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Commitment to diversity and inclusion in fulfillment of the university's mission; knowledgeable of university and pre-professional curriculum requirements; knowledgeable of advising practices and principles; excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; excellent analytical skills that include analyzing data with standard statistical methods, interpreting the results, and providing written summary of data analyses, reasoned judgment, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others.
Minimum Education/Experience
The advisor position requires a Bachelors degree. A minimum of two years of work experience. Masters degree preferred.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties


Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Interview, and counsel students regarding admission procedures and academic requirements for the nursing degree program. The advisor will speak with the student, takes notes on the interview and provide feedback to the admission committee on his or her impression of the student. In addition, the advisor will meet with students to give information about the various nursing programs we offer. During this interview the advisor will answer any questions the student will have about the nursing program.


Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Coordinate and refer support services and programs within the department and university. The Advisor will connect students to appropriate services involving academic tutoring, financial aid and planning, career options, mentoring programs, and programs and activities specially designed for students with limited English proficiency.

Identify the diverse needs of students who are striving to meet the program requirements; review and maintain individualized action plans to help each student achieve goals; implement appropriate retention strategies to support students' efforts. Continue to meet with the student to review his or her action plan to reassess the progress and determine whether another course of action will be needed.

Develop and deliver presentations to classes, student organizations, and employers, as well as provide career information, planning programs, and career development activities to students on an individual or group basis to include: developing and promoting career programs such as career fairs, on campus interviewing programs, and job search.

Implement and develop proactive strategies for veterans and at -risk students and implement general advising best practices. These strategies will aid in determining common educational barriers to student success and offer a method for overcoming these barriers. These practices will aid nursing students to better matriculate through the nursing program.
