Special Note

This position is exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules.
Position Purpose
In collaboration with the Upward Bound Tacoma team and with direction and support of the Director of Upward Bound Tacoma, this position is responsible for maintaining and building positive relationships with participants, families, and partner schools, as well as promoting high school academic achievement and post-secondary success for program participants. This position works within the target schools of Mount Tahoma and Lincoln High School to provide direct services for students, including check and connect interventions, as well as college, career, and academic advising. Based on these relationships, this role develops and teaches college success courses and plans career and cultural workshops tailored to student interests, aspirations, and needs. These responsibilities require strong organizational abilities and coordination of student workers and temporary staff, as well as coordination with other programs and organizations like outreach, colleges, universities, community-based organizations, social service agencies, and other Evergreen programs and offices. The position requires commuting between work sites, including Evergreen, high schools, agencies, and cultural events.
Program Profile
Upward Bound Tacoma is The Evergreen State College's pre-college program serving Mount Tahoma and Lincoln High School youth. The program partners with eligible participants, families, target schools, and local communities to develop the motivation and skills necessary for participants to enroll in and obtain a post-secondary degree. The TRIO Upward Bound regulations require that two-thirds of all participants must be both low-income and potential first-generation college students. The remaining one-third must be either low-income, first-generation college students, or students who have a high risk for academic failure.
Upward Bound Tacoma provides educational enrichment, promotes high school achievement, and increases participation in post-secondary education. Services include year-round academic support, including a six-week Summer Learning Institute with a residential component hosted at Evergreen. Upward Bound Tacoma's services to students at Lincoln and Mount Tahoma High Schools support the mission of The Evergreen State College to provide outreach and services to local communities. The Upward Bound Classic grant has been funded at The Evergreen State College since 1977, and both Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math-Science grants are currently in the third year of a five-year funding cycle. The program is contingent upon continued federal funding.
Nature and Scope
This position is responsible for assessing individual participant's strengths and needs, as well as developing and implementing plans of action to ensure high school and college success. The position is also responsible for teaching, planning, and developing curriculum for the after-school program at the target high schools and Summer Program. Responsibilities include creating individual action plans, monitoring academic progress, ensuring students enroll in college preparatory courses necessary for acceptance to college, providing academic, personal, and career advising support, serving as a liaison for students, and keeping the Director informed of program and student progress. Working closely with school personnel and community partners, the position supervises and manages after-school activities, evening and weekend activities, and monthly Saturday meetings. This position also supports other Upward Bound activities, including special events and recognition programs and assists with data collection and report writing.
