Job Description:

The Communications Specialist is responsible for creating compelling original content for internal and external audiences across a variety of delivery vehicles, including the firm's internal communications hub, our external-facing website, printed and digital marketing collateral, live and recorded events, podcasts and social media, and direct client communications.

This dynamic and versatile communicator plays a key role in supporting the firm's collaborative internal culture, advancing our reputation within the legal marketplace, and fostering connections between clients, communities, and our 1,300 partners and employees. The Communications Specialist works with attorneys and professional staff-including business development and marketing colleagues-to manage projects from concept to completion, creating work that advances firm objectives and showcases our brand.

  • Work closely with attorneys, professional staff, and marketing/business development colleagues to identify and meet communications needs. Create dynamic, compelling content for internal and external audiences that reflects our brand, supports key firm initiatives, and inspires engagement.
  • Write stories, interview colleagues, clients, and community partners, create nomination content for individual and firm awards.
  • Script and record videos and work with editing team to shape footage into dynamic final product.
  • Serve as liaison and/or communications lead for various functional areas or initiatives, potentially including (but not limited to) pro bono, well-being, employee engagement, human resources and/or IT.
  • Play a critical role in creating content and maintaining consistent publication calendar for firm intranet; work with cross-department colleagues responsible for maintaining subpages on topics of interest (such as pro bono, wellbeing, and more).
  • Collaborate with marketing and business development teams with writing for marketing collateral including external advertising, evites, alumni communications, and other outreach.
  • Build strong relationships with attorneys, professional staff leaders, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Script and prepare attorneys and other firm messengers for videos, speeches, and live events.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously; deliver regular project updates to stakeholders and form collaborative relationships with peers on discrete projects.
  • Consult with colleagues as needed on messaging around major internal change initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 2-4 years' experience in an agency or large professional communications environment.
  • Experience with video production.
  • Experience with content management systems.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Outstanding ability to distill legal details and other complex concepts into succinct information anyone can understand
  • Excellence in various aspects of video production, from scripting to coaching on-camera talent to recording and finalizing content
  • Ability to communicate about a range of topics, from routine to highly strategic, and to identify the appropriate medium for each communications piece
  • Experience with and knowledge of content management systems, and an ability to work with stakeholders at varying levels of technological ability
  • Ability to build productive relationships and offer trusted communications guidance to attorneys and other key stakeholders
  • Experience increasing audience engagement within a large professional services or nonprofit organization
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously without compromising quality
  • Comfort working under pressure and on varying timelines, from quick-turn deadlines to months- or yearslong initiatives. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, advance long-term projects incrementally, and work productively with a variety of personalities
  • Background and/or demonstrated interest in the issues, concepts, and terminology of the legal industry or other professional services field is highly desirable

In accordance with applicable Federal and State laws, the anticipated annual salary range for this position, depending on location, is as follows:

  • Boston, MA: $69,807 to $99,851
  • Los Angeles, CA: $69,807 to $99,851
  • Long Island, NY: $72,715 to $104,012
  • New York, NY: $72,715 to $104,012
  • Rochester, NY: $58,172 to $83,210
  • San Francisco, CA: $72,715 to $104,012
  • Washington, DC: $69,807 to $99,851

In addition to a standard benefits package, this role may be eligible for additional contingent compensation based on an array of factors, including but not limited to: work performance, geographic location, work experience, education, and qualifications. Because such contingent compensation is not yet calculable or may be zero ($0) in some circumstances, the above-listed salary range(s) are Nixon Peabody's good faith estimate of the annual salary(ies) it reasonably expects to pay for the position at the time of this posting.
