Position description

The Molecular Graphics and Computation Facility (MGCF) in the UC Berkeley College of Chemistry seeks applicants for the position of MGCF Director, who will be responsible for the overall operations of the facility, which is an integral part of the college's research infrastructure. The Director role involves supporting the college's training mission, working to integrate computational chemistry into the curriculum, and making sure that students are trained in the latest research methods.

The Director is responsible for: (a) consulting with and providing innovative guidance to graduate students, faculty, and other researchers who require the use of scientific software in their individual research efforts; (b) defining facility hardware and software requirements; (c) obtaining grant funds to purchase state-of-the-art hardware such that the facility remains a first-rate research environment; and (d) either through direct action or through the delegation to and supervision of a system administrator, seeing to the day-to-day administration of logins, software, and associated equipment to ensure that the facility functions reliably and efficiently.

The Director will use expert knowledge of current methods in computational chemistry as implemented in software and applied to molecular, material and biological models to carry out the duties of this position. This includes expertise with chemical big data and machine learning theory and application. The Director may also supervise and oversee research and technical staff. The MGCF Director reports to the Executive Associate Dean in the College of Chemistry.

In addition, the Director will be responsible for managing the finances of the MGCF, which includes: 1) Preparing annual budgets for the Executive Associate Dean and other college leadership; 2) Monitoring monthly financial reports provided by the college business office or campus accounting to be sure that all revenues and expenses are accurately and completely accounted for; and 3) Participating in the periodic review and revision of the recharge rates for services, working in conjunction with the Executive Associate Dean, other analytical facilities directors, and the college business office.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • PhD (or equivalent international degree)

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

  • PhD (or equivalent international degree) in computational chemistry, bioinformatics, or closely related field
  • At least 7 years postdoctoral or similar post PhD experience
  • Significant publication record in the field
  • Experience with Large-Scale Computational Workflows and ability to manage and run large-scale computational chemistry experiments, particularly in bioinformatics and molecular modeling
  • Training & Mentorship experience in computational chemistry and biomolecular modeling

Preferred qualifications

  • 8-10 years postdoctoral or similar post PhD experience
  • Advanced bash linux command line skills
  • System administration skills sufficient to clone systems, manage user logins, install packages, manage firewall, configure SLURM/SGE queuing system
  • Experience with molecular modeling of proteins, materials and small molecules using Maestro, Amber, Namd, Desmond, Gaussian, Qchem, Orca, and Materials Studio
  • Scientific programming skills include Python and machine learning, including using large public datasets
  • Experience in compiling scientific packages for a computing cluster
  • Experience mentoring graduate student and postdoctoral researchers
  • Experience in Virtual Screening and Docking Studies with proven ability to conduct structure-based drug discovery or toxicology with dockingand molecular dynamics
  • Abilty/Experience working with biologists, chemists and others on broad based, interdisciplinary teams and projects
  • Proficiency in Managing Research Data: Ability to handle large datasets efficiently, including database deployment, management and version control
