JOB SUMMARY:
Rigger supervisor is to supervise and coordinate activities of workers engaged in installation and repair of rigging and hoisting positioning machinery equipment and structural parts aboard ship and in the yard. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1.Fabricates, installs, and repairs rigging and weight-handling gear on ships and attaches hoists and pulling gear to rigging to lift, move, and position machinery, equipment, structural parts, and other heavy loads aboard ship. 2.Forms slings and towing bridles by looping and splicing cable or by crimping metal sleeve around cable end and body of cable, using crimping tool. 3.Splices and ties rope to form nets, ladders, and other rigging. 4.Installs hooks, swivels, and turnbuckles in rigging. 5.Reeves lines through blocks and palm and needle. 6.Selects and attaches gear, braces, and cushions, according to weight and distribution of load, availability of hoisting machinery, and presence of obstacles. 7.Signals workers operating cranes or other equipment to move load. 8.Installs beam clamps, pad eyes, gallows frames, and other supporting structures for rigging gear. 9.Controls movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or in confined spaces, using jacks, pulley blocks, chain falls, and rollers. 10.Lays out and handles lines, snubs lines on cleats or bollards, or hauls in lines with capstans. 11.Installs or repairs ship's rigging, such as mast or antenna rigs, small boat handling gear, and which or windlass rigging. 12.Installs masts, booms, yardarms, and gaffs, working aloft as required. 13.Rigs and hangs scaffolds and stages that require blocks and pulleys. 14.Performs other duties as assigned. 15.Able to operate a crane and forklift as needed. 16.Demonstrate the ability to move equipment safely and efficiently from space to space on navy ships and around the yard. 17.Must be able to work long hours, weekends as required by the supervisor to support project schedule. Must be able to work OT and weekends in short notice and must have reliable transportation. 18.Other duties as assign by supervisor. QUALIFICATIONS: 1.Graduation from a standard apprenticeship/trade/vocational school. 2.High school diploma or GED required and 1 or more years of related experience or equivalent of training and experience. 3.Ability to gain access to military installations. 4.Must pass a drug test and background check. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1.Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and seek help with weights over 50 pounds. 2.Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs/vertical ladders; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This is a physically demanding position and may accommodate some physical disabilities. Physical dexterity may be required when performing walk thru and inspection of job sites. In the performance of the walk thru you will be required to transverse steep stairwells, vertical ladders and bending or stooping thru tight spaces. There may be occasional lifting of materials weighing not more than 50 pounds. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: This position works on the jobsite. There is exposure to hostile environments, loud noises, hazardous chemicals/fumes and airborne particles, smoke, extreme temperatures moving mechanical parts: high, precarious places. During work-site visits will be required to wear appropriate PPE including, but not limited to: Hard hat Ear plugs or attenuator Safety shoes Dust mask or respirator Gloves |
