SUMMARY

The Trade Compliance & Claims Specialist will be responsible for ensuring that all import and export activities comply with international trade regulations and standards recyclable and semi- finished metals. This role involves managing customs clearance processes, maintaining compliance with trade laws, and providing guidance on customs-related matters, and a commitment to ensuring smooth and efficient customs clearance processes. In addition to compliance related work, the individual will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to resolve commodity claims as they arise.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS



  • Act as a reference for Incoterms 2020 for the commercial group, as it pertains to their application in international trade, based on the nature of the transaction and the needs of the business.
  • Manage and oversee all customs clearance processes for the import and export of metals, including recyclable and semi-finished metals.
  • Engage in continuous learning on global trade regulations, leveraging industry webinars, seminars, and best practices to keep SMT ahead of regulatory changes.
  • Ensure compliance with international trade regulations, including C-TPAT, PIP, AEO, and other relevant certifications and accreditations.
  • Collaborate with internal departments, such as logistics, sales, and customer service, to ensure timely and accurate customs clearance.
  • Provide guidance and support on customs-related matters, including classification, valuation, country of origin determinations, and applicable duties.
  • Develop and maintain effective import compliance controls, SOP's, and overall programs to reduce the risk of regulatory penalties and improve process efficiencies.
  • Keep up to date with changes in international trade regulations and ensure the company's compliance programs are current and relevant.
  • Liaise with customs authorities and other regulatory bodies to resolve any issues or discrepancies.
  • Prepare and submit necessary documentation for customs clearance, including binding rulings and prior disclosures.
  • Monitor carrier compliance and onboardings while maintaining current and sufficient certificates of insurance, regulatory and safety compliance.
  • Facilitate communication and resolution of international claims negotiations and domestic rejections/downgrades in partnership with commercial individuals.
  • Track claims, enforce claims policies, and communicate with suppliers and consumers regarding final outcomes in a timely manner.
  • Maintain centralized claims management system for tracking and reporting purposes.
  • Evaluate and convey any trends to the appropriate individuals to mitigate future systemic risk exposure.
  • Ensure full compliance with international trade regulations, customs laws, and export controls, mitigating risks associated with cross-border trade.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Travel up to 20% of the time. Must be able to travel by air, rail, car based on most efficient and effective mode of travel to accomplish goals and objectives.

Qualifications

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE



  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent (required)
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (highly preferred)
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in customs and compliance, preferably within the recyclable and semi-finished metals trading industry (required)
  • Valid license as a Licensed Customs Broker (required)



SKILLS AND ABILITIES



  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and customs management software
  • Experience with C-TPAT, PIP, AEO, and other relevant certifications and accreditations


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS



  • Routinely sits; uses hands to type
  • Stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl as needed
