Animal Care Supervisor 2 - DLAM

Description The Animal Care Supervisor 2 will conduct or assist with routine, emergency and critical veterinary care and animal husbandry activities for clinical or laboratory animal patients. May be involved in conducting or assisting with research and teaching projects. They will supervise and direct daily operations of the assigned animal research facilities, ensuring that animals receive proper husbandry and care, and that the facility is in compliance with regulations and guidance set by the department, the campus and governmental agencies. They will also provide supervision and training for the assigned staff.

Qualifications Required:

• Associate degree in animal science or biological science with 4 years of related experience in a higher education setting, or a combination of equivalent education, training and experience.
• Five (5) years of supervisory/management experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Comprehensive knowledge of the standards and guidelines of the "Guide for the Care and
• Use of Laboratory Animals and the Animal Welfare Act.
• Ability to effectively communicate with people of varying degrees of veterinary medical training, faculty and staff.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, peers, and subordinates.
• Ability to set priorities and work independently under conditions of fluctuating workloads. Required
• Knowledge of cleaning and sanitizing agents and their proper application to ensure a clean and healthful environment.
• Skill in handling a variety of animal species in a variety of situations to prevent injury or distress to the animal or self.
• Computer, Microsoft Office and Skill in reading documents written in standard English and skill in using basic English words and phrases to follow the necessary policies and procedures as they apply to laboratory animal medicine.
• Ability to communicate with excellent oral and written skills
• Ability to write and maintain documents (e.g. SOPs, working instructions), and provide training to the personnel in the areas.
• Demonstrated Supervisory Skills.
• Skills in motivating others, stimulating people to effective action.
• Skill in para veterinary procedures to assist veterinarians and/or researchers, in a variety of species including but not limited to non-human primates and swine.
• Knowledge of and skills in animal husbandry including employee safety precautions using
• AALAS manual, federal guidelines, and UCLA policies and procedures.

Preferred:

• Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level (LATG) by the American
• Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
• Ability to lift feed bags up to 50 lbs, to handle animals up to 100 lbs, and to push racks up to 300 lbs.
• Knowledge of University and departmental procedures to effectively supervise, train, assess, and discipline staff.
• Knowledge of and ability to accurately follow all SOPs associated with a GLP study, including required study procedures and GLP documentation procedures.
