Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin (UW) Alzheimer's Disease (AD) Clinical Trials Program in Dr. Cynthia Carlsson's lab is a member site of the national Alzheimer's Clinical Trials Consortium (ACTC) which conducts prevention and treatment clinical trials research in the field of Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. The program has a strong commitment to partnering with communities to ensure that high-risk populations are represented in research. The research nurse practitioner (NP) has an integral role within the AD Clinical Trials Program and serves as a clinical expert within a research team. The research nurse practitioner assists the Principal Investigator (PI), co-investigators, and clinical research coordinators with the operations of clinical research studies under the guidelines of research protocols and UW Madison policies.

The research nurse practitioner operates within a larger team and often works closely with scientists, program managers, participant recruitment specialists, schedulers, study coordinators, and students across the UW Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) and other AD-related programs. The NP will perform physical and neurological exams; perform lumbar punctures; interpret research blood and cerebrospinal fluid test results, cognitive testing results, and electrocardiograms; evaluate serious adverse events; maintain participant records; provide on-call and back-up support to investigators as requested; assess decision-making capacity; return research results to participants including biomarker results, and provide advice to participants and their clinicians regarding their health concerns or adverse events. The NP will work chiefly at University Hospital but may work at other clinical or community sites in Madison.

The research nurse practitioner may participate in the recruitment of participants for AD clinical trials and related research studies through attendance at outreach events. They may have opportunities to speak with supporting organizations about Alzheimer's disease research and current findings. The applicant will communicate and coordinate with multiple research related departments, including UW Clinical Trials Institute, UW Health Sciences IRB, UW Pharmaceutical Research Center, and the Clinical Research Unit for study start up, maintenance, and closure. The applicant will also work with ACTC leadership and study personnel, central IRBs, ACTC regulatory teams, study monitors, and industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated trial personnel.


Responsibilities:
Provides health care services under a collaborative care agreement with physician. Educates patients, develops and evaluates care plans, and prescribes medications and treatments in support of patient health and well-being.

  • 20% Assesses, diagnoses, and treats illnesses, and manages chronic health problems
  • 30% Develops, implements, collects data, and evaluates primary health care services as directed by individual care plans
  • 15% Develops individualized care plans based on medical assessments in accordance with medical best practices and established rules and regulations
  • 5% Educates patients and their support systems on how to manage conditions and to promote the health and well-being of patients and those around them
  • 10% May provide expertise, training, and guidance to the community, peers, and/or students
  • 10% Completes clinical assessments and lumbar puncture procedures on research participants and educates participants and their support systems on managing conditions related to research participation
  • 5% Plans staff implementation of protocols and on-going quality review of one or multiple highly complex clinical research trials or programs
  • 5% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of employees

Education:

Required
Master's Degree
The successful candidate must be a graduate from an accredited nursing school. The successful candidate must also be certified or be eligible to obtain certification to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Wisconsin.


Qualifications:

Experience or training to work with geriatric patients, persons with cognitive impairment and dementia, and individuals from under-represented, high-risk populations is preferred. Experience in interventional therapeutic clinical research studies and performing procedures is also preferred.

The applicant should have the ability to work both independently and cooperatively within the clinical research team and to provide leadership and supervision to research team members.


License/Certification:

Must hold or be eligible to obtain a Registered Nurse (RN) License for the State of Wisconsin

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $100,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The expected salary range (full-time base, prorated for appointment percentage) for this position is $100,000 up to $120,000 for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.

Additional Information:

University sponsorship is not available for this position, including transfers of sponsorship.
