Organizational Unit Overview
The role of the BSOM Office of Student Success and Wellness is to provide academic counseling, mental health counseling, wellness support, and student development services to Brody medical students and graduate students. Services are provided through the office which range from academic advising to coaching to academic counseling to mental health counseling. With an emphasis on maximizing the overall educational experience and the achievement of students towards meeting expected learning outcomes. Resident Physicians and fellows enrolled in Graduate Medical Education programs through BSOM and ECU Health Medical Center are also served by the office.
Job Duties
The Brody School of Medicine Department of Academic Affairs is seeking to hire a Success Coach for Clinical Sciences & Graduate Medical Education for its Office of Student Success and Wellness. This will be a Full-time, 12-Month, At Will position.

Duties of the position will include -

Academic Coaching - 60%
* Develop and implement procedures and tools for coaching intake, delivery of coaching services, and monitoring coaching progress.
* Provide coaching assessment and intervention to learners to aid the development of effective study strategies, time management, organizational skills and other factors that impact academic preparation and performance.
* Provide coaching assessment and intervention for learners related to test-preparation for course exams, licensure exams, and high stakes testing such as NBME (National Board of Medical Examiners) Clerkship Subject Examinations, USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) Step 2, USMLE Step 3, Board Exams, and other high stakes exams.
* Collaborate with faculty, staff, administration, and team members to organize and deliver USMLE Step 2 support
* Conduct coaching through individual or group sessions that help learners assess their own performance, identify goals and develop success plans.
* Coach learners on self-directed learning skills, self-advocacy and resiliency skills to aid in identifying and overcoming obstacles that may be impeding academic, personal or professional success
* Provide embedded support to learners on the Internal Medicine clerkship.
* Provide Performance Improvement Plan support to learners on the Surgery Clerkship.
- Provide coaching support to learners for LIPPMR (Learning Improvement Plan Pre-Meeting Reflection) on clerkship rotations.

Program Management & Outreach - 30%
* Provide coordination and oversight for the Resident Physician/Fellow Referral Program including receiving and responding to referrals received from clinical program faculty and staff in Graduate Medical Education.
* Monitor progress of learners on caseload with proactive outreach and communication as well as check-ins and scheduled meetings while also responding to questions, concerns and needs.
* Creates, deliver, and evaluate workshops, presentations, or learning modules on various topics that support learner success in the clinical phase of medical school and graduate medical education.
* Refer learners to additional campus, community or external resources as appropriate.
* Serve as a consultative resource to clinical faculty/staff, departments, and Graduate Medical Education.
* Assist in providing transition support to learners as they transition from foundational sciences to the clinical phase of the curriculum. This will include provision of individual support and developing and delivering support information and materials to cohorts of learners.
* Preparing and delivering educational sessions or information for learners as they transition from the clinical phase to residency education or as requested by clinical faculty/staff in Graduate Medical Education.

Other Duties - 10%
* Maintain file for each learner who receives services.
* Collaborate with team members to collect data, evaluate services, and make recommendations for coaching program improvements.
* Serve as a resource to the Clinical Curriculum Committee, Clerkship Coordinators, Graduate Medical Education at ECU Health, and residency/fellowship programs at ECU Health.
* Attend BSOM departmental and division meetings or events as assigned.

Contingent on availability of funding.
Minimum Education/Experience

  • Master's Degree in Education, Psychology, Student Affairs or related field with demonstrated knowledge of coaching models that support student success.


  • Experience in an academic setting providing academic support or student development assistance.
  • Experience in conducting educational workshops, seminars, and/or small group sessions.
  • Experience in working with tutoring and/or peer assisted learning programs.
  • Computer, organizational, data entry and project management skills, including demonstrated skills in Microsoft software: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, REDCap, Qualtrics, and Canvas.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
None
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • At least 3 years of experience and demonstrated achievement as an academic coach or experience working with students as an educator or in another capacity to promote student academic success


  • Experience in working with individuals from varied backgrounds
  • Experience in exercising discretion and sound judgment when handling confidential issues
  • Experience working with graduate students, medical students or other professional students
  • Experience with standardized examinations (e.g. GRE, MAT, NBME Subject examinations, USMLE Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3)
  • Ability to communicate and work as part of a team with students and colleagues
  • Detail-oriented and excellent time management skills
  • Ability to engage in sensitive and complex problems solving including flexibility to meeting various needs of students
