Summer Intern - Protein Engineering and AI Model Development.

Department Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated Summer Intern to join our Protein Engineering team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of advanced computational tools and methodologies for protein engineering, leveraging state-of-the-art AI models and fine-tuning techniques. As an intern, you will work on projects at the intersection of computational biology, machine learning, and bioinformatics, gaining hands-on experience in a fast-paced, innovative environment.

This internship position is located in Santa Clara, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • Collaborate with the Protein Engineering team to develop computational tools for protein analysis and design.

  • Explore and utilize protein language models (e.g., AlphaFold, ESMFold, ProtT5) to analyze and predict protein structure and function.

  • Fine-tune existing protein language models for specific protein engineering applications.

  • Perform data preprocessing, feature extraction, and model evaluation using large-scale protein datasets.

  • Collaborate with wet lab experts to integrate computational insights with experimental validation and design strategies.

  • Develop user-friendly scripts and workflows for automating protein engineering tasks.

  • Document project progress, results, and methodologies, preparing a final presentation for the team.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer).

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education: You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).

Required Majors:

  • Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Biotechnology, or a related field.

Required Skills:

  • Strong programming skills in Python and familiarity with relevant libraries (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn).

  • Basic understanding of protein structure and function, as well as protein engineering principles.

  • Experience with machine learning techniques and/or computational biology tools.

  • Familiarity with protein language models and AI-based approaches in biological research is a plus.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.

The expected salary for this position based on the primary location of California is $45.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
