Job Summary:

The Department of Botany is seeking a Museum Associate Director to provide strategic planning and operational management for the Botany Garden and Greenhouse. The Botany Garden and Greenhouse living botanical collections are among the largest and most diverse university plant collections in the U.S., with 2300 taxa in 220 plant families, spread across 8000 sq. ft of greenhouses and a 1.3-acre garden. The Botany Garden and Greenhouse's primary program objectives are student-focused and include providing plant materials for teaching in the botanical sciences, facilitating research utilizing collection plants and BGG facilities, and enabling public access to the collections.

Key responsibilities include setting Botany Garden and Greenhouse policies in accordance with the needs of the Department of Botany, supervising garden and greenhouse staff, managing garden and greenhouse accounts, budgets and resources, and pursuing funding opportunities to improve the Botany Garden and Greenhouse facilities and programs.

The Associate Director develops and provides opportunities for undergraduate learning through independent study, capstone experiences and existing programs (e.g. Undergraduate Research Scholars), and workshops, and takes a direct role in training and mentoring undergraduate student employees, volunteers and students. The Associate Director provides horticultural expertise and experimental consultation directly to undergraduate and graduate students conducting research in the facility. Additionally, the Associate Director provides horticultural training and instruction to student volunteers and employees, mentors students conducting independent study and capstone experiences, and serves as a mentor in independent study, capstone and research mentorship courses. Furthermore, the director develops, hosts, and teaches workshops and outreach events for students.

Responsibilities:
Oversees a major section of a museum or collections unit, sets strategic direction, and directs operations to enhance teaching, research, and general interest. In large complex units, may function as an Assistant Director or Chief Curator. In smaller units, may manage unit operations.

  • 15% Directs and approves policy development at the department or division level. Advises museum leadership on policy, legal, and ethical issues
  • 25% Contributes substantially to planning the organizational structure, and evaluates existing strategic needs and makes recommendations to museum leadership for program enhancement
  • 20% Develops budgeting and resource management for a significant portion of the unit in collaboration with unit leadership and identifies and pursues funding opportunities in line with the overall museum or collection development strategy
  • 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 20% Facilitate, develop, and implement opportunities for student and community engagement through independent study, research, volunteer, workshop and outreach events.

Botany, Horticulture, or highly related field


Qualifications:

Required:

- A combination of education/ experience in both Botany and Horticulture are critical for success in this position.
- 2 years minimum experience in horticultural care of diverse plant groups in a greenhouse and/or garden setting
- 2 years minimum experience working in higher education, prefer experience working directly with faculty, instructors and students
- Ability to directly, proactively and reactively support faculty/ instructors/ staff/ graduate/ undergraduate students
- Experience with laws, ethics and permitting pertaining to botanical collections.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, project scales and scopes, with differing timelines in a dynamic environment
- 2 years minimum experience leading or managing a team

Preferred:

- Demonstrated ability in training and mentoring undergraduate students
- Demonstrated ability to managing budgets and resources
- Experience managing greenhouse and garden facilities

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary for this position is $87,112 - $127,571 depending on qualifications and experience. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurance and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.
