Department Summary

The Mathematics Department at UNT is a comprehensive doctoral degree-granting department with 22 tenure-track and tenured faculty members, 20 lecturers and adjuncts, and 57 graduate students. Tenured and tenure-track faculty members pursue research in mathematics. Many are internationally renowned in their areas of expertise. Mathematics department instructors teach graduate students, math majors, science and engineering majors, specialized service math classes for students in business and education, and university core math classes required for all UNT students. At every level, mathematics department members are dedicated to providing their students with effective, high-quality instruction.

Position Overview

This position serves as the first point of contact for the Mathematics Department, acting as a receptionist in the main business office and assisting students and community members. It also supports instructors by providing classroom materials and ensuring adequate supplies are available.

Additionally, the role assists guest speakers and visitors, maintains the department's calendar of events, creates and distributes seminar talk posters, and sends out announcements. It also manages the department's social media presence and updates electronic resources with important announcements and events.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma and three years' of moderately responsible and varied office administration or business management experience; or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Advanced customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of accounting/budgeting procedures.
  • Ability to work under pressure, to adjust to constant changes, to handle multiple tasks, and to coordinate the work of others.
  • Ability to keep complex records, to assemble and organize data of complex nature, and to prepare and submit reports in acceptable formats.
  • Ability to conceptualize, plan and organize multiple programs and assignments effectively.
  • Ability to work on complex and confidential tasks utilizing judgment, tact, and resourcefulness.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining good working relationships.
  • Knowledge of policies, practices, procedures and terminology of assigned function.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Associates degree Two years experience in a college/university setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work without close supervision.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Experience and PeopleSoft a plus.
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator and/or Canva is a plus.


Job Duties:

INVENTORY



  • Maintains office, classroom, and lab supply inventories. Responsible for monthly inventory of available supplies, ordering as needed and distribution of supply orders.


MAINTENANCE



  • Responsible for submitting facility work orders for the department and surplus requests. Maintains office hours and name plates for the department each semester and updates website with current office hours.


SOCIAL MEDIA/COMMUNITY OUTREACH



  • Maintains electronic resource content (TV monitors) in the department. Assists with updating social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter (X), Instagram and YouTube.


ANNOUNCEMENTS/CALENDAR EVENTS



  • Creates posters and send out announcements for departmental events.


PURCHASING



  • This position is responsible for making purchases for the department using a purchasing card (Pcard) following university guidelines. Makes entries in Concur coding purchases and attaching receipts on a weekly basis, ensuring monthly deadlines are met.


ELECTRONIC FILES MAINTENANCE



  • Assists with electronic database resources (Perceptive Content), including scanning documents, etc.


CUSTOMER SERVICE/COMMUNICATION



  • Receptionist for the main office of the Mathematics Department, greeting visitors as first point of contact and answering phones.
  • Provides classroom supplies to instructors. Directing visitors to appropriate offices in the department and around campus.
  • Communicating via email and in person with customers, students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Responsible for directing student assistants for daily errands and tea time as needed.
  • Perform annual physical inventory and install reassigned computers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
