About the Department |
The Department of Population Health and Pathobiology trains doctors of veterinary medicine and scientists who will specialize in understanding and reducing disease in animal populations, particularly food animals. Disease in these populations poses serious risks to food safety, has economic implications, and, in cases where the disease is communicable to humans, is a significant public health hazard.
Our faculty are recognized experts in the fields of epidemiology and public health, pathology, microbiology, immunology, parasitology, pharmacology and risk assessment, and poultry, ruminant, and swine health management. Our goals are to advance veterinary medical science through innovative basic and applied research, and by mentoring and inspiring students, providing world-class clinical and diagnostic services, and offering the public the latest knowledge through innovative extension and engagement activities. |
Essential Job Duties |
The Research Assistant will work independently to collect data and analyze research results related to animal models of lung inflammation, employing single-cell
RNA sequencing approaches. This role involves a combination of laboratory research and animal model experimentation to support ongoing projects.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Research & Analysis
- Conduct cell culture, western blotting, genotyping, RT-PCR, immunoprecipitation, flow cytometry, cytokine estimation, and confocal microscopy.
- Perform in vitro experiments in primary cell culture, including immunochemical staining, protein extraction, cytokine assays, cell toxicity, apoptosis, and proliferation assays.
- Design and execute experiments involving protein and RNA analysis in mouse models of lung inflammation.
Animal Handling & Experimental Models
- Maintain transgenic mouse lines, including breeding and genotyping.
- Administer toxicants or drugs via various routes.
- Perform rodent animal handling and survival surgeries.
Collaboration & Data Management
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including biologists, clinicians, and data scientists, to design research activities.
- Maintain detailed research records in laboratory notebooks and computer storage systems.
- Periodically monitor equipment to ensure proper functioning.
Training & Lab Maintenance
- Establish and maintain an inventory process for laboratory supplies.
- Train undergraduate and graduate students, as well as research fellows, in bench experiments.
- Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
Master's degree in a relevant field. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Animal handling, molecular biology techniques, and effective written and oral communication skills.
- Applicants should possess a background in data analysis, process modeling.
- Must possess excellent analytical and writing skills.
- Fluency in English.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Demonstrated experience in immunology, toxicology, molecular biology during Masters training.
