Provides comprehensive Arboriculture Care for Boys Town. Operates heavy machinery and equipment to accomplish duties of the job.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
Provides comprehensive Arboriculture Care for Boys Town
- Establishes and implements annual arboriculture management plan. Utilizes up-to-date methods (technology) and Integrated Pest Management. Prunes for health, vigor, safety and form. As needed, assesses and implements correction-to-damage action caused by others or nature.
- Reviews work performed by others to ensure the arboricultural guidelines are followed or waived in specific circumstances.
- Plants trees to reforest - checks for size of pit, drainage, spacing, topsoil, staking and protection, pruning, watering and maintenance.
- Operates equipment such as a tree spade, high reach, chain saws, chipper, ladders, ropes, tractor, auger and related equipment to plant, trim and move trees.
- Hazard Tree Program: Using the format approved, identifies potential or existing conditions of all Boys Town trees that could cause injury or damage to residents, employees and guests. Implements remedial action as necessary.
- Installs, inspects, and maintains tree cables and braces.
- Ensures general work-site safety.
- Completes site cleanup after tree care operations.
- Assists in snow removal and responds to all call-in requests for such duty. May perform duties of an Equipment Operator and Grounds Maintenance Specialist.
- Supervises temporary summer grounds crew.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Advanced chain saw use and felling techniques.
- Advanced climbing techniques and equipment.
- Ability to apply knowledge of tree biology, tree identification, insect and disease identification experience. Rope and saddle, cable and bracing, hazard tree programs, and tree selection. Tree problem diagnosis and management.
- Ability to apply insecticides, pesticides and other chemicals necessary to maintain a healthy environment for the landscape.
- Knowledge of proper equipment use and maintenance.
- Ability to apply instructional skills to accurately present training sessions on-the-job, safety of equipment and methods caretaking and planting techniques.
- Ability to apply communication skills to regularly interrelate with employees and associates.
- Ability to apply organizational skills to prepare work schedules while maintaining accurate records.
- Ability to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to understand work orders and plans, as well as organize assigned tasks for completion.
- Ability to travel to multiple sites to complete work.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of three years field experience in the following areas: chemical application, spraying, injections, tree identification, proper pruning methods, tree planting, large limb and tree removals required.
- Must possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record and pass an annual Motor Vehicle Registration (MVR) check.
- On-call (continuously or rotationally) to provide support. Available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays if needed required.
- State of Nebraska certified pesticide and herbicide applicator license is required within 6 months of hire required.
- Certified in at least one of the following within 6 months of hire: City of Omaha Forester Certificate - First Class, NAA Certified Arborist, or ISA Certified Arborist required.
- Certified in-house, post-hire to operate boom truck, forklift, and front-end loader required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, EQUIPMENT USAGE, WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Moderate to very heavy physical work, occasionally having to lift up to 70 pounds without assistance and in excess of 100 pounds with assistance. Walking, standing, reaching, bending, digging, and required to work at heights of 10 feet or more.The worker is subject to both indoor and outdoor conditions in temperatures below freezing and above 100 degrees for extended periods of time. Exposure to inclement weather, dust, allergens, noise, pesticides, and herbicides.
