The opportunity

The Associate Dean of the School of Arts, Sciences, and Education (SASE) is responsible for the day-to-day academic operations of the school including the coordination and execution of academic terms with key oversight of course scheduling, management of student complaints, adjunct faculty recruitment, retention, and management, coordination with advising and other offices, and other duties as assigned. The associate dean uses independent judgment, integrity, and a love of teamwork to advance the mission of the school, support faculty, and meet institutional goals. The associate dean is a critical thought partner to the dean and leads the school in their absence.

What you'll do:

  • Oversee adjunct faculty recruitment, retention, and teaching effectiveness
  • Manage curricular proposals and new programs, in collaboration with the dean and department chairs
  • Coordinate with Campus Academic Operations and department chairs in making adjunct faculty teaching assignments, setting schedules, making classroom assignments, and ensuring compliance with contractual obligations
  • Approve and monitor courses-by-arrangement (CBA) and other teaching assignments
  • Oversee management of student matters including progress tracking, petitions-to-amend degrees, registration and degree requirement issues, including collaborating with Academic Advising
  • Handle student complaints about faculty, involving interaction with faculty members, students, student advisors, and department chairs, ensuring processes are implemented fairly
  • Manage student academic dishonesty concerns, guiding faculty in detection and reporting, advising students of their rights and responsibilities, recording the events, and collaborating with the Office of Community Standards to ensure processes are followed
  • Oversee school processes for academic integrity and other community standard violations and serve on relevant committees
  • Work with the dean and dean's office team to ensure policies and protocols within SASE are followed
  • Partner with the dean on strategy, including identifying potential investments and budget priorities, with primary responsibility for tactical level decision-making and implementation
  • Collaborate with Student Success team, Campus Academic Operations, The Commons, Office of the University Registrar, and other offices that partner with the dean's office on operational and student-focused issues
  • Establish processes and policy for recurrent academic operations
  • Attend meetings of the Campus Academic Leadership Team, SASE dean's office, SASE department chairs, SASE faculty, and other meetings with external offices as assigned
  • Be the acting dean when the dean is unavailable, including substituting in providing support to the school and dean's office, leading faculty and chairs' meetings, and representing SASE to the VPAA, other deans, and external partners
  • Directly manage employees, including the assistant dean, dozens of adjunct faculty, and others as assigned
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the dean

What we're looking for:

  • Doctorate (or relevant terminal degree) in a field represented by SASE
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in higher education
  • Five or more years of experience teaching at the college level
  • Evidence of active scholarly agenda
  • Experience working with higher education technology (ex: Colleague/Banner, Brightspace or other LMS, and Power BI)

Compensation

The annual pay range for this position is $83,071.00 - $132,940.00. Actual offer will be based on skills, qualifications, experience and internal equity, in addition to relevant business considerations. We expect this position to be hired in the following target hiring range $91,794.00 - $124,192.00.
