About the Job

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) Advising and Academic Services seeks a 100% time (12 month) Academic Advisor. In CAHSS, advisors assist students through providing academic information, helping with the selection of academic majors, providing support through academic difficulties, and directing students to resources within the University. This individual will support the CAHSS Advising Office by maintaining a direct advising caseload, coordinating recruitment events, and assisting with new student orientation, and other duties. The anticipated starting salary for this position is $50,000-55,000.

Advising (75%)

The primary job responsibility is to provide proactive academic advising for students. As an educator, employ effective pedagogy to deliver the advising curriculum toward achievement of UMD's established student learning outcomes. Guide students to the knowledge, skills, resources, and experiences that will help them succeed in clarifying and attaining their educational goals. Facilitate learning and personal development by engaging students in critical, creative, and reflective thinking.

  • Provide advisement and academic services to students
  • Monitor student progress and intervene, as needed, with appropriate referrals and resources related to academic difficulties
  • Present at New Student Orientation and Faculty Training sessions
  • Actively participate in a variety of programs related to student recruitment and resilience

Programming and Records (20%)

  • Coordinate professional pathways for undergraduates (graduate, law school, professional fields of study, etc)
  • Develop and present workshops to promote advanced degrees
  • Manage recruitment events
  • Maintain advising records
  • Special projects as assigned in support of Advising and Academic Services and CAHSS

Professional Development and Services (5%)

  • Serve as a committee member on the UMD Academic Advising Committee
  • Serve on collegiate and campus-wide committees as assigned/elected
  • Participate in professional development opportunities
  • Stay current in the field of college student learning and development

Qualifications

Required/Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree plus four years of college-level advising or other student affairs experience, OR Master's degree plus two years of college-level advising or other student affairs experience
  • Commitment to working effectively with all students, colleagues, and communities
  • Demonstrated excellent written and public speaking skills
  • Demonstrate working independently, collaboratively, and under supervision
  • Experience creating, developing, and implementing events and/or workshops

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in counseling, student personnel or related field from a regionally accredited school
  • Knowledge of fine arts, humanities, and social science degrees and helping undergraduates prepare for graduate/professional programs
  • Two or more years of relevant academic advising experience (high school or college)
  • Experience working with complex systems in a fast-paced and structured setting
  • Familiarity with personal and career development issues for undergraduate students
  • Familiarity with degree audit systems, course catalogs, and Transferology
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with colleagues
  • Demonstrated experience in presenting and public speaking, including the ability to effectively communicate complex information to diverse audiences in professional, academic, or community settings

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $50,000 - $55,000 yearly; depending on education/qualifications/experience
