Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Clinical Supervisor-Microbiology.

In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for supervising the daily operation of the Clinical Microbiology laboratory.
Weekend Rotation may be required.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the daily operation of the Microbiology laboratory.
  • Examines work cards and computer printouts to assure compliance.
  • Explains to employees their responsibilities and standards of performance.
  • Meets with senior staff to discuss work performance of other staff.
  • Acts as a reference for Techs and offers guidance. Counsels subordinates as necessary.
  • Plans training and development of staff.
  • Recognizes staff needs and develops staff programs accordingly.
  • Explains safety, infection control and emergency procedures thoroughly staff to pursue continuing education and seek professional growth.
  • Trains staff effectively and maintains records of performance. Instructs staff on safety and infection control.
  • Prepares and submits reports and plans as required by superiors.
  • Submits reports and plans as requested by superiors in a timely fashion.
  • Communicates the need for new policies and procedures to superiors.
  • Helps develop short and long range plans for accomplishment of goals.
  • Understands departmental goals and sets objectives to reach them.
  • Maintains quality assurance and control records and programs.
  • Assists in setting work standards, monitors and corrects deviations.
  • Reviews results of daily QC and QA procedures.
  • Prepares and submits monthly data to Director for review. Maintains QC manuals Re: media, instruments, reagents, etc., Maintains and updates lab manuals.
  • Exercises communications intra and inter departmentally.
  • Routinely examines HIS and LIS systems recommending changes or enhancements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Position Specific Responsibilities:
Primary Function:
1. Oversees the operation of the Microbiology laboratory.
2. Optimizes staff distribution, workflow and TAT.
3. Ensures that workup processes are consistent with SOP
4. Ensures that supplies are adequate and properly managed to support laboratory operations.
4. Reviews results for timeliness, accuracy and compliance with established procedures.
5. Reviews QC, QA and Proficiency Exams
6. Performs staff competency evaluations at appropriate intervals
7. Provides technical guidance and assistance to technologists
8. Assist with the evaluation, validation and implementation of new tests and technology.
9. Trains staff on new procedures,
10. Meets with staff at regular intervals to present and discuss changes and problems.
11. Counsels and disciplines staff when necessary.
12. Communicates with clinicians to resolve problems and address requests

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or Science.
  • Minimum of five years experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory with supervisory/management responsibilities and knowledgeable in all areas of microbiology.
  • Effective oral, written, communication skills.
  • NYS License

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Science Degree in Microbiology with certification by American Academy of Microbiology or American Society for Clinical Pathology.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $135,220 - $159,000 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
