Radiation Protection Technician I or Radiation Protection Technician II

Summary

Radiation Protection Technicians are responsible for providing radiological protection of the work force during routine and post-accident conditions, including surveys, dose assessment, and conservative decision making.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Perform surveys of rooms and plant areas to document and identify changing radiological conditions

  • Perform radiological job coverage of maintenance and operations activities to ensure regulatory and procedural requirements are met

  • Brief Radiation workers on radiological hazards of the work area

  • Calculate air sample results and evaluate radiological conditions against procedures, to ensure expected conditions have not been exceeded

  • Participate in Emergency planning drills, including response to contaminated injured workers, fission barrier degradation scenarios, and releases of radiological hazards to the environment

  • Participate in the stations corrective action program, to identify and correct conditions in the plant

  • Implement regulatory required programs, such as radioactive material/waste shipping, instrumentation calibrations and source checks, and dosimetry issuance

Basic/ Required Qualifications

Radiation Protection Technician I

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (e.g. GED)

Radiation Protection Technician II

  • Two year degree (Associate of Science) in radiation protection, or nuclear navy training, or equivalent education or training programs. A minimum of three years of experience in lieu of a degree

  • Two years of experience in a radiation protection, chemistry or computer science career

Desired Qualifications

  • Associates degree from a college accredited by the Institute of Nuclear Power Operators (INPO)

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics or a related field

  • Navy ELT

  • Certified by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technicians

  • Meets ANSI 3.1 requirements for a Power Reactor Radiation Protection Technician

  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers in all levels of an organization

  • Demonstrated effective analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills

  • Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work

  • Demonstrated the ability to work as part of a team, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing processes, regulations, responsibilities, and work environments

Specific Requirements:

  • Willing to relocate to within 75 minutes of nuclear plant in order to meet requirements of Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.

  • Must obtain Nuclear Unescorted Access Authorization

  • Respiratory physical

  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds

  • Ability to meet RP essential job functions (climbing, lifting, pushing, pulling, ability to wear protective equipment, etc.)

  • This role requires the use of weight rated equipment, with max ratings ranging from 275lbs to 325lbs, in order to meet the essential functions of the job.
