This position is responsible for working in a cross-functional team of scientists and engineers to deliver on agreed milestones for new product development, early phase evaluations and legacy projects. The individual is expected to apply his or her knowledge and practical skills in the fields of tribology and engineering. Job responsibilities include addressing well-defined problems of small scope, following standard practices and procedures. He or she is expected to be hands-on and spend a significant amount of time in the laboratory environment. The individual is expected to work with guidance from senior members of the team and to be guided by the existing policies and procedures. The individual is expected to have a fundamental understanding of tribology and biomechanics (ex: wear mechanisms, joint motions, etc.) and transport phenomenon (momentum, mass and heat transfer) in materials processing.

What will you be doing?

  • Work in a cross-functional team of engineers and scientists to deliver on agreed milestones for new product development, early phase evaluations and legacy products. Depending on the need of the project, design, initiate and implement experiments that will satisfy the regulatory and internal safety needs. Interact with internal as well as external regulatory personnel as needed. Apply his or her knowledge in the field of tribology to solve problems of low complexity.

  • Individual in this position is expected to respond to basic questions while acquiring higher level organizational knowledge and skills.

  • Perform administrative functions as necessary (objective setting, development plans, training, self-appraisal, etc.). Write technical reports and ensure maintenance of complete and accurate records for all controlled documentation. Other miscellaneous activities include attending meetings, submitting financial/travel requests, coordinating team activities, conducting tours and making presentations.

  • With the input from more senior members of the team and or department manager, assist in reviewing appropriate internal or external studies that will satisfy internal and external regulatory, clinical, and safety requirements. Communicate test plans and results to the functional teams.

  • Maintain familiarity with current technical developments in the field of orthopedics and tribology via the literature and attendance at courses and conferences as required to support S&N's product development efforts. Prepare presentations and technical material needed for sales, marketing and medical education teams as needed.

  • Comply with the laboratory management practices set-up by the management including S&N global health, safety and environment practices. Create work instructions for safe and effective use of equipment in the laboratory. Manage laboratory equipment maintenance and calibration with internal and external resources. Assist senior members of the team to order laboratory consumables, assist manage budgets, and write capital requests as needed.

What will you need to be successful?

  • Education:

    • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Materials or Biomedical Engineering, or other appropriate field required.

  • Experience:

    • 0 - 2 years hands-on experience.

    • Previous experience with or knowledge of Tribology is a plus.

    • Internship experience in a lab would be advantageous.

  • Must have good team and communication skills.

  • Requires use of e-mail, Internet and standard Microsoft Office Software.

  • Must have good time management skills.

  • Travel Requirement: Domestic-Up to 5%
