The Position

East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) invites individuals to apply for Limited Term (LT) Ranger/Naturalist I positions. The current LT vacancies are in the East Bay Watershed/Recreation Division and the Mokelumne Watershed Recreation area. The Ranger/Naturalist I is a training position which, under close supervision, performs basic maintenance and operational duties related to EBMUD's watershed and recreation facilities and assists in tasks related to the development and conservation of range, forestry, fisheries, and wildlife. As knowledge and experience are gained, routine duties are carried out without detailed supervision. This position routinely works weekends, holidays, shift work and overtime; has public contact with the visiting public, answering questions and providing information about natural resources and available facilities. Ranger's patrol EBMUD's watershed lands, use hand and power tools to build and repair fences, remove hazardous trees and brush, install signs, and construct and repair various structures and other facilities.

General duties may include:

*Constructing, maintaining, operating, and repairing watershed/recreation facilities to include fences, picnic tables, fireplaces, water developments, sanitation facilities, irrigation systems, and fishing and boating docks; uses common hand and power tools to make basic repairs.

*Answering visitor inquiries; giving directions; interpreting and explaining natural and historic features of the area; conducting tours and securing visitors' cooperation in adhering-to the rules and regulations of the area; calling for assistance if visitors' cooperation cannot be secured.

*Performing range and general watershed management duties to include conducting surveys, constructing erosion control structures, trails, and fire breaks; felling diseased and unwanted trees; posting signs; planting trees, lawns, and flowers; and participating in integrated pest and weed management.

*Assisting with EBMUD's fire inspection and prevention programs.

*Assisting in conducting various fisheries/wildlife surveys and conservation programs.

*Instructing visitors in safe boating practices; performing search and rescue duties; administering first aid and responding to various emergency situations.

*Maintaining a sanitary water supply by removing litter and garbage, pumping chemical toilets, burying dead animals, taking weather and reservoir elevation readings, and ensuring public health compliance.

*Operating power boats, motor vehicles, and radio communications equipment in performance of duties; performing preventive maintenance; making minor repairs and adjustments to tools and equipment.

*Keeping records and preparing oral and written reports of work performed, monies received, inventories, special incidents, and dangerous conditions.

*Attending periodic training sessions in first aid, boating safety, fish and conservations and public safety.

*May direct the daily work of temporary and part-time personnel; may orient and train new personnel in work methods and procedures.

Requirements

1. High school graduation or its equivalent; and

2. California driver's license and satisfactory driving record.

3. Sufficient swimming ability for self-preservation and for learning and performing lifesaving techniques.

4. Strength and agility to take boats out of water and drag fire hose up a hill.

5. Willingness to work exposed to adverse weather conditions and where fire, insects, plants and animals are potential hazards.

6. Willingness to wear a uniform and to work shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed.

7. May be required on a scheduled basis to be clean shaven as required to wear respiratory protection equipment.
