UMass Memorial Health - UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our Consultation Liaison Psychiatry team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment, providing psychiatric consultation services to patients admitted to medical/surgical units and those presenting in the emergency department. We are the largest provider of psychiatric services in central Massachusetts, with a team of over 400 faculty members working across a range of clinical, research, and academic settings within UMass Memorial Health and the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. Our Department of Psychiatry is recognized as a national leader in various sub-specialties, including public sector psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Job Summary:

The Nurse Practitioner in Consultation Liaison Psychiatry will provide psychiatric consultation services to patients admitted to medical/surgical units and those presenting to the emergency room. You will work closely with attending psychiatrists, medical teams, and nursing staff to develop integrated treatment plans that address both medical and psychiatric concerns.

This position offers a unique opportunity to provide evidence-based psychiatric interventions, educate staff, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of psychiatric disorders in medically complex patients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Psychiatric Assessments: Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations of patients in medical/surgical units and the emergency room to assess for psychiatric diagnoses, risk factors, and treatment needs.
  • Collaborative Care: Work closely with medical and surgical teams to develop integrated treatment plans that address both psychiatric and medical conditions.
  • Interventions and Treatment: Provide evidence-based psychiatric interventions, including medication management, psychotherapy, and crisis intervention, tailored to the needs of the patient.
  • Staff Education: Educate medical and nursing staff on psychiatric issues, including the recognition of symptoms, appropriate interventions, and strategies for managing psychiatric emergencies.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and case conferences to discuss complex cases and coordinate care with other healthcare professionals.
  • Documentation: Document all clinical encounters accurately in the Epic electronic medical record system, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Continued Learning: Stay current with developments in consultation liaison psychiatry through continuing education and professional development.
  • On-Call & Weekend Availability: Optional participation in weekday evening and weekend shifts, with additional compensation offered.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Licensure: Current Nurse Practitioner license in the state of Massachusetts.
  • Certification: Board certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is required.
  • Experience: Prior experience in a psychiatric setting is required, with specific experience in consultation liaison psychiatry.
  • Skills:
    • Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills in psychiatric care.
    • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and develop integrated care plans.
    • Proficiency in psychiatric medication management and crisis intervention.
    • Excellent communication skills for educating staff and interacting with patients and families.
    • Experience with electronic health records (EHR), preferably Epic.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a hospital or medical/surgical setting, particularly in consultation liaison psychiatry.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices in psychiatric care and integrated care models.
  • Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
