The Role:

As the Senior Director of Underwriting at Providence Health Plans, you will be the cornerstone of strategic planning and policy formulation, driving profitable membership growth, retention, business expansion, and diversification-each aligned with our long-term vision. Positioned within a vibrant and forward-thinking organization, you'll provide clarity in risk analysis and ensure consistency across all underwriting activities and methodologies, spanning diverse regions. This leadership role will represent the Plan alongside Sales, advocating pricing transparency to establish credibility and trust with Producer partners and employer groups.

What You'll Do:



  • Strategic Innovator: Collaborate with the Leadership team to design and implement strategies that fuel product development, growth in special risk arrangements like stop-loss, and diversification of business lines.
  • Operational Excellence Leader: Champion the establishment and achievement of department service level standards, overseeing all rating and underwriting activities for new and renewing commercial group lines of business.
  • Relationship Architect: Cultivate high-performing partnerships with Sales, Product, and Actuarial departments, fostering a collaborative environment that drives corporate objectives.
  • Transparency Advocate: Represent the Plan, alongside Sales Leadership, championing pricing transparency to establish credibility and trust with Producer partners and employer groups.
  • Risk Management Pioneer: Ensure successful underwriting implementation for all commercial lines of business, maintaining stringent audits, processes, and guidelines compliant with State and Federal regulations.
  • Mentor & Talent Developer: Inspire and mentor Underwriting Managers and staff, attracting top industry talent and promoting an environment of empowerment and sound decision-making.
  • Financial Performance Guardian: Develop and oversee the financial performance of special risk arrangements, directing maintenance, updates, and auditing of underwriting methodologies consistent with strategic objectives.


What You'll Bring:



  • Educational Background & Experience: A Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Mathematics, or a related field, complemented by a Master's Degree in Business Administration (preferred), and over a decade of healthcare underwriting experience.
  • Leadership Expertise: 5 years of Director-level experience, demonstrating prowess in teamwork promotion, delegation, training, and coaching.
  • Analytical Mastery: Exceptional quantitative skills and problem-solving abilities, paired with a deep understanding of insurance underwriting and rating methodologies.
  • Strategic Visionary: A strategic thinker with a track record of swiftly addressing challenging strategic questions alongside senior management.
  • Technical Proficiency: Expert knowledge in spreadsheet, statistical, and database software packages, with excellent math and project management skills.
  • Communication Excellence: Superb communication skills in written, verbal, and listening formats, coupled with excellent negotiation and presentation abilities.
