Overview
The Radiology Services Assistant plays an integral role in greeting patients, family members and other staff to the radiology department. They check the patients in, answer phone inquiries from patients and hospital personnel. This position is also responsible for preparing CDs and pushing images electronically to other facilities, assisting physicians in locating patient images, loading images onto PACS and maintaining orderliness of the reception work area and patient reception rooms, remaining HIPAA compliant at all times.

Responsibilities
Administrative and Customer Support
- Greets the patients as they arrive at imaging reception desk and checks them in, notifying the appropriate modality of their presence. Answers incoming calls, taking adequate messages.
- Faxes or mails Imaging exam reports as requested.
- Orders radiology exams appropriately with attention to detail and assuring all necessary information is appropriate and available.
- Schedules patient procedures according to written protocols and provides daily schedules for the Imaging Services Department.
- Participates in the clinical instruction of student radiographers as appropriate.
- Acquires medication lists as appropriate and assists customers with documentation of information.
- Ensures accurate registration and verification of patient information and updates patient information as appropriate, including eligibility and precertification and approval requirements.
- Burns CD or pushes images electronically as requested. Release of information is then documented.
- Loads outside images into the PACS system.
- Notifies technologists of STAT procedures and additions or cancellations to the schedule.
- Determines the need for and gathers the necessary patient and exam information to call the on-call Imaging Specialists into work when needed.
- Assists Imaging Technologists with patient throughput, which may include instructing and assisting patients to dress for their exams, assisting with toileting needs, transferring patients to exam tables, weighing patients for administration of contrast materials, and obtaining checklists and screening forms, including MRI safety specific checklists prior to study and entry into MRI. Also verifies medication lists with patients for accuracy.
- Must possess a commanding understanding of all Imaging Services exams to provide direction and answers to any inquiries.
- Consistently uses excellent telephone manners and rapport in communicating with all persons in the scope of work duties. This includes telephone, intercom and direct communication as well as all forms of communication devices available in the Imaging Services Department.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Six months previous medical-related field or customer service field.
- Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.
