Position Overview As the Principal Application Architect for Payments Technology, you will be a visionary leader who designs the future of our Payments Application Ecosystem, powering the growth of our rapidly growing $1 billion business. You will be responsible for setting the architectural vision and developing a multi-year strategy to drive engineering teams to execute on that vision. You will work in close collaboration with Product and Business leadership to align your modernization plans with business outcomes, balancing existing application maintenance with iterative and demonstrable progress on new development. You will have opportunities to dive into the design of our data and business logic layers but will primarily focus on crafting exceptional customer-facing solutions - shaping GraphQL APIs, designing micro apps and micro frontends, and architecting event-driven experiences that are fast, scalable, and intuitive. What You'll Do Architect the Future Design and architect modern, scalable application suites across distributed systems using cloud-native principles. Lead the development of micro frontends, modular applications, and service-based backends with technologies like GraphQL and event-driven architecture. Build reference architectures and patterns that make intelligent use of multi-cloud native services to drive performance, resilience, and scalability. Optimize system designs to balance cost, performance, security, and compliance. Continuously evaluate emerging technologies, lead POCs, and make forward-thinking recommendations that improve business agility and outcomes. Drive Alignment Across Teams Partner with Cloud Engineering, DevOps, Infrastructure, and Platform teams to drive consistent and successful project delivery. Collaborate with engineering leads and product managers to align solutions with business objectives and roadmaps. Modernize and Evolve the Platform Lead initiatives to modernize legacy applications, introducing modern architectural patterns while ensuring smooth transitions. Evaluate existing applications to determine the most effective modernization approach: refactor, replatform, or rebuild. Ensure CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices are baked into every solution to support rapid, high-quality delivery. Secure and Protect Applications Lead the design and implementation of secure application architectures that align with modern security frameworks and best practices. Integrate IAM solutions using tools such as Okta, ensuring secure and seamless authentication and authorization flows. Partner with Security, Risk, and Compliance teams to ensure all solutions meet regulatory requirements such as HIPPA and HITRUST. Evangelize Technology Standards and Champion Execution Define and evangelize architectural best practices, patterns, and technical standards across teams. Drive adoption of new technologies and guide teams through implementation with hands-on support. Establish metrics to measure technology adoption and ensure teams are executing on architectural vision. Conduct architectural reviews, deep technical assessments, and proof-of-concept efforts to de-risk delivery. Mentor the Next Generation Provide hands-on coaching to development teams on solution design, code quality, and cloud-native best practices. Build a pipeline of junior architects through mentorship and training and upskilling junior and mid-level engineers. Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation to scale knowledge across teams. What You'll Bring to Zelis Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrable working experience. 10+ years of experience in application development, with at least 5 years in an Architect role. Deep experience architecting enterprise-grade applications in a multi-cloud environment, including: Modern frontend architectures optimized for scalability, resiliency, and deployability DevOps and CI/CD concepts Application-layer security principles and HIPPA/HITRUST auditability Transformation of legacy solutions into vertically integrated application stacks Event-driven and asynchronous architectures Possesses and continually enhances the following technical kills: AWS and Azure cloud-native services UX frameworks such as Blazor or React GraphQL, REST API, and BFF pattern design Modular architecture concepts; micro apps, micro frontends, reusable components in a design system Containerization and orchestration tools (Docker, Kubernetes) CI/CD design using GitHub Actions and IaC tools (Terraform, Bicep) IAM tools like Okta, security and identity standards including OAuth2.0 and SAML Compliance and regulatory standards HIPPA and HITRUST Preferred Qualifications Experience leading geographically distributed teams. Experience in healthcare and financial services or payments platform. Location and Workplace Flexibility We have offices in Atlanta GA, Boston MA, Morristown NJ, Plano TX, St. Louis MO, St. Petersburg FL, and Hyderabad, India.
