The Position

The Payroll Specialist will report directly to the Financial Controller and be responsible for accurately processing and recording payroll across multiple legal entities. Responsibilities will also include providing timely and accurate financial information, daily data entry, and other payroll related duties. This role will support the accounting workgroup by handling various general ledger analysis, recording, and reporting functions. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, strong attention to detail, solid organizational and time management abilities, a working knowledge of payroll best practices, and a strong understanding of federal and state regulations.

The salary range for this non-exempt role is $ $27.25 - $34.04/ hour.

Essential Functions



  • Responsible for gathering, maintaining, and recording all data related to payroll.
  • Serves as primary point of contact to employees for all payroll related questions.
  • Partners with third party payroll provider to process biweekly payroll. Audits all transactions for accuracy, including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, garnishment, and best practices.
  • Runs payroll reports by compiling summaries of earnings, taxes, deductions, leave disability and nontaxable wages.
  • Balances and prepares payroll journal entries for approval. Ensures proper general ledger accounts are setup and mapped in the payroll system.
  • Reviews the quarterly payroll tax reports for federal & state agencies as prepared by their party payroll provider for accuracy and agreement with the general ledger. Researches discrepancies and works to come to a resolution.
  • Maintains primary relationship with third party payroll provider customer support and tax reconciliation groups. Opens cases for issues to be resolved, tracks and follows up on open cases, and works closely with accounting team to resolve bank/reporting discrepancies.
  • Conducts year-end reporting for W-2s.
  • Develops and maintains financial and operational ad hoc reporting as needed.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for internal and external audits related to payroll.
  • Handles accounting functions assigned, including journal entries, account reconciliations, reporting and tracking of financial data.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.


Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Hybrid Office Environment with 2+ days in office at the Milwaukee Headquarters location.

Bring Your Best: Position Minimum Qualifications



  • An associate's degree in business administration, accounting, or related field;
  • A minimum of 2 years of payroll processing experience working with sensitive and confidential information;
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to comply with attendance and timeliness policies.
