Overview
PURPOSE STATEMENT: Installs and maintains gas appliances, tanks and cylinders and gas lines.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Installs tanks and cylinders -determines proper location of tank at the job site; levels and firmly sets tank; determines the most effective method of pipe routing; installs piping from tank to the building in the vicinity where gas is to be utilized (performs the cutting and threading).
- Installs appliances - delivers same when required; unloads and installs appliances at designated locations (removes old appliances when necessary), utilizing applicable devices such as regulators, pressure and temperature limiting devices and valves; performs manometer tests on installed piping to check for gas tightness and pressure; adjusts pilot.
- Installs gas service lines from gas mains to supply gas to customer's appliances; installs meter and regulator as designated on the order to ensure adequacy of gas supply.
- Completes necessary reports and forms with data and information required - IG's, CWO's, meter cards, E and U Tags, time sheets and investigations.
- Plots necessary data on field maps and annotates necessary information.
- Directs the activities of a helper (Fitter's Helper) while on the job.
- Makes service calls as a serviceman involving repairing and adjusting of appliances.
- Occasionally performs duties of Tank Truck Driver - fills tank, drives out to locations, pumps gas, and records necessary data.
- Performs other and related work as required - e.g., checks to see that truck is adequately stocked and equipped before leaving for job site; takes care of truck assigned to him; assists in running meter checks at meter test stations.
- To properly and safely install and service gas appliances, tanks, and gas lines. Responsible for truck, tools, equipment, and materials assigned; responsible for members of his crew as to conduct, quality and quantity of work, training, and safety practices.
Qualifications
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Must have at least three years progressive experience or training in gas installations and repairs, preferably dealing with LPG.
- Qualified to perform all types of ferrous and non-ferrous piping and tubing welding.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities and proven ability to deal directly with customers.
- Must have knowledge of pertinent codes and standards; e. g., gas sections of the current plumbing code of the City and County of Honolulu, Distribution Standards, P. U. C. safety and construction standards dealing with gas systems, meters, regulator sets, etc. (ASA Pamphlet B31. 8), State Fire Marshal's Code (NBFU Pamphlet No. 58 and 59).
- Able to interpret and follow construction engineering drawings and prepare accurate diagrams and field sketches of completed work.
- Requires a high degree of mechanical aptitude and a good safety record.
REQUIRED LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, REGISTRATION OR DESIGNATION:
- Must possess a truck driver's license and P. U. C. Driver's permit, Class IV.
SUPERVISION:
- Under general supervision of the I.G. Operations Superintendent or Unit Leadman, performs specific job tasks following instructions as to methods and working detail; has some latitude for independent judgment. Provides work instructions to one or two helpers assigned to him.
WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Good physical condition required.
- No back or serious eye limitations.
- Work occasionally involves a heavy degree of physical effort.
- Primarily outdoor work; however in some cases, work indoors when installing appliances and servicing appliances; exposure to gas fumes varies from low to an occasional high concentration which requires the incumbent to use a gas mask.
- May be required to work after hours occasionally on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays; subject to emergency calls and on-call assignment.
