Job Summary

Come join our dynamic, highly skilled Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery inpatient team. The Otolaryngology inpatient services at Parnassus are high volume and focus on a variety of specialty otolaryngological diagnoses. The position is day shift, Monday-Friday, no nights or weekends. The Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery offers a broad scope of services for the management of ear, nose, and throat diagnosis. Specialty programs within the department include otology/neurotology, the Balance and Falls Center, the Cochlear Implantation program, head and neck surgery, rhinology and endoscopic sinus surgery, endocrine (thyroid/parathyroid) surgery, minimally invasive skull base surgery, facial plastic surgery, laryngology, pediatric otolaryngology, general otolaryngology, sleep apnea surgery, voice and swallowing disorders, sialendoscopy and audiology.

Under the management of the Physician team and Associate Director of Clinical Operations, the Nurse Practitioner will be expected to demonstrate clinical competence to care for the otolaryngology patient population and work independently under the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) scope of practice. The APP has the primary responsibility for the diagnosis and management of chronic and acute otolaryngology conditions for adult patients with complex medical and surgical needs in the in the inpatient hospital setting. The APP will be responsible for carrying out independent assessment and diagnosis, following established protocols, performing otolaryngology related procedures under the standardized procedure protocols, conducting patient education, assisting in the operating room, performing pre and post-op care and all related duties as required for inpatient care such as rounding, orders, discharges and consults.

The APP is recognized as a leader and clinical resource, will demonstrate investment in the overall forward movement of the practice and the organization. The APP must have the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks and work well with staff, patients, patient families, and other providers. A high degree of independence, initiative, assertiveness, and diplomacy are necessary in dealing with faculty, staff, and patients in a complex environment.

This position requires the flexibility to orient and work at varied UCSF Medical Center locations. Our Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery APP manages patients collaboratively with Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery Attendings, Fellows, Residents, and Interns.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $100.48 - $1130.31 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Graduation from a California Board of Registered Nursing recognized Nurse Practitioner Program with a master's or doctoral degree aligned with the patient population and clinical role.
  • Minimum five (5) years of NP experience in Head & Neck Surgery
  • Minimum three (3) years at an Academic Medical Center

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience working Post Anesthesia Care Unit
  • Evidence of professional development through certification, conference attendance, post-graduate education and teaching duties
  • Able to perform difficult foley insertion
  • Able to perform abscess drainage

License/Certification


  • Current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work.
    • Accepted Certifications for this position: Adult Inpatient (ACNP-BC, AGACNP-BC, ACNPC-AG, ACNPC)
  • Current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California.
  • Complete a BRN recognized graduate master's degree program as a nurse practitioner.
  • Complete Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration with Schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 registered to a California address
  • Submit enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day. CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments.
  • Current AHA BLS.
  • Current AHA ACLS.
  • State regulation requires that you have a supervising physician to practice.
  • Incumbents with less than 6 months of NP experience will be hired as a Nurse Practitioner 1.

In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
