JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Animal Diagnostic Lab at The Pennsylvania State University is searching for a skilled Research Technologist to serve in the bacteriology section of a veterinary diagnostic lab whose purpose is to protect animal health, human health, and ensure food safety.

Key responsibilities:

  • Perform a broad range of testing in bacteriology and molecular microbiology on a variety of specimens and samples to include culturing, bacterial enumeration and identification, antimicrobial susceptibility, and PCR.

  • Perform egg and environmental sample processing and culturing for the Pennsylvania Egg Quality Assurance Program, the Food & Drug Administration, and National Poultry Improvement Plan.

  • Review results, send reports, and respond to client needs.

  • Other duties include purchasing laboratory supplies, routine laboratory and equipment maintenance, preparation of reagents and materials, record keeping, and quality assurance tasks. The Technician is expected to cross train in other areas of the laboratory.

This is a limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility of refunding.

Required qualifications:

This position will be filled at the level of Professional or Intermediate Professional, depending on the final applicant's experience and education. Minimum qualifications for the professional level include a bachelor's degree, previous relevant work experience accepted in lieu of education. Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline and/or a Medical Technologist Certification. Additional education and/or experience are required for higher-level positions.

Preferred experience and skills:

Previous clinical laboratory experience, computer data entry proficiency, and farm, agribusiness, and/or veterinary medical background are highly desirable.

Additional information:

  • Rabies vaccination and biennial titer checks are strongly recommended and will be covered by the laboratory.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$34,800.00 - $55,500.00
