Summary:
Provide high level technical support for the Caenorhabditis Genetics Center (CGC), which is the world's stock center for nematode strains and ships ~30,000 strains annually to over 1,500 laboratories worldwide. Implements many CGC activities including: 1) order processing, 2) shipping strains and navigating US postal and country-specific import/export requirements, 3) interfacing with scientists around the world to set up accounts and resolve order issues and other questions, 4) communicate with the U's EFS team to resolve payment issues, 5) perform various data entry tasks to keep the CGC databases up to date, 6) gather CGC data and statistics for NIH grant proposals and yearly progress reports.

Essential and Other Duties:
40% Coordinate nematode strain handling and distribution for the Caenorhabditis Genetics Center:
Prepare, package and ship nematode strains to scientists throughout the world. This requires knowledge of roundworm strains, appropriate handling and compliance with research policies and procedures. This requires navigating country-specific import/export requirements and includes assembling multi-order shipments to international distribution hubs. Based on orders received, pull the relevant strains from incubators, preparing necessary organic materials for shipping.

30% CGC Issue Resolution:
Interface with scientists around the world to resolve issues with strain orders and shipping. This will require scientific knowledge of these worms and their different sub-types, as well as tracking international shipping requirements for biological matter. Communicate with the U's EFS team to resolve payment issues. Resolve issues with customer accounts and update customer profiles in the CGC website.

20% Research Data Coordination:
Compile strain data and import it into the CGC databases. Maintain freezer databases by keeping sample locations, freeze date and quantities up-to-date.

5% Grant Support:
Gather CGC data and statistics for NIH grant proposals and yearly progress reports. Analyze NIH Reporter databases by cross referencing with the CGC user base.

5% Lab maintenance:
Coordinate ordering and stocking of supplies.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications Must Be Documented In Application Materials

Required Qualifications:
BA or BS degree or combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least four years. Work in the Caenorhabditis Genetics Center (CGC) interacting with CGC staff and providing customer service support to scientists around the world who are users of the facility. Must have excellent time management and organizational skills and be able to coordinate and prepare large nematode shipments containing multiple orders. Ability to communicate effectively (written and oral) is essential.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with database software, for example Filemaker Pro. Background in biological sciences. The successful candidate will be conscientious, detail-oriented, and have excellent time management and organizational skills. The successful candidate will be able to work efficiently, both independently and as part of a team. Ability to effectively research and implement import/export regulations for biological specimens.

About the Department

The Department of Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development comprises faculty from both the Medical School and the College of Biological Sciences. Faculty members are engaged in research in three key disciplines of the department-genetics, cell biology and developmental biology.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $20.00 - $20.60; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
