Basic Function

Assumes overall responsibility for the effective and efficient operation of the Maintenance Department. Plans, directs, coordinates and controls the activities of employees in meeting plant maintenance objectives. Adhering to plant policies and procedures. Cooperates and works closely with the other departments within the guidelines enunciated by the Plant Manager. Plans for daily distribution of workflow. Serves as the Primary Emergency Coordinator for the facility Emergency Action Plan. To provide a safe and accident-free work environment.

Organizational Relationships

Accountable to the Operations Manager. Maintains close contact with other Plant Department heads. These include Rough End, Machine Room, Sanding Room, Sample Department, Cabinet Room, Finishing Room, Rub and Pack, and Personnel Department. Maintains a working relationship with community emergency organizations and Corporate Managers who may be sources of assistance during a facility emergency. Works in conjunction with Corporate Safety Manager / Safety Committee Chair person on safety issues that arise to help find solutions.

Specific Responsibilities

Departmental Operation


  • Manages and Leads with Integrity.


  • A key member of the safety team.


  • Directs employees to certain duties which fit their abilities for the daily workload.


  • Participates in readiness planning in the event the Facility Emergency Action Plan is activated.


  • Upon notification of a Facility emergency, responds to determine the type and scope of emergency.


  • Maintains all pre-maintenance on Dust Collectors to prevent any possibility of a breakdown. This includes daily checks on the entire system and keeps records on gauge meters.


  • Coordinates all maintenance repair in entire plant which includes the building and all machinery. This includes location of necessary repair parts in the shortest amount of time to prevent shutdown of a machine
  • Directs all upkeep of fire fighting equipment located inside and outside of plant.


  • Directs activities of custodian to maintain clean restrooms, offices, and other plant facilities.


  • Coordinates activities of all employees to include ground maintenance. This consists of cutting grass, trash pick-up, etc.


  • Monitors all interplant transfer of machinery parts to be sure of location and the return of same specific parts.



Personnel


  • Interviews job applicants to satisfy departmental needs.


  • Performs timely wage reviews of employees, counseling as needed and recommends raises.


  • Briefs new employees on policies and procedures established by the company. Re: Safety, Security, Health, etc.


  • Trains employees in all aspects of the job and monitors performance.


  • Counsels employees whose work performance is sub-standard.


  • Maintains a list of key employees (and phone numbers) who may be needed in the event of a facility emergency.


  • Keeps the Facility Human Resources office informed of any changes regarding personal contact information, i.e. telephone numbers, etc.


  • Dutifully supports company programs which solicit employee participation.


  • Visits sick employees and attends funeral associates with employees.


  • Terminates employment of employees, who after proper counseling fail to maintain established work standards.



Authority

The department supervisor is authorized to take any reasonable action necessary to maintain effective plant operations. While serving as the Emergency Co-ordinator, may take any action reasonable and necessary to protect life, property, and the environment. Does have the authority to activate the Plant 7 Emergency Action Plan. These actions must be in accordance with the Bernhardt policy manual and other established policies, practices and subject to the general or specific authority as established by the Operations M
