The Histology Tech receives and ensures the correct identification of specimens and prepares specimens for microscopic examination by the pathologist. They are responsible for performing routine histopathological tasks including microtomy, embedding, immunohistochemistry and special staining procedures in preparing specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. Assists in frozen sections and Radiology procedures according to protocols using appropriate instrumentation, and evaluation of information taking appropriate action as needed without supervision. Demonstrates understanding of scientific theories and techniques of procedures performed.

Responsibilities

-Utilizes knowledge of LIS, HIS and appropriate software systems as they apply to the laboratory.

-Complies with requirements of CAP, Accrediting Organization and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) and other regulatory agencies.

-Regularly displays unique problem solving skills to address department and /or customer needs or problems.

-Correlates various clinical laboratory testing with cytological and histological procedures, applying to clinical conditions.

-Maintain specimen integrity with shared specimens in clinical lab.

-Evaluates problems and initiates troubleshooting relating to methodology including instrumentation and procedures appropriately notifying Section Supervisor as needed.

-Demonstrates understanding of the basic and complex principles and functions of laboratory instrumentation used.

-Performs, records, and monitors all QC data and instrument maintenance following established procedures which includes proper documentation.

-Looks for ways to improve processes and recommends solutions. Participates in quality improvement initiatives.

Successfully participates in all accreditation and other proficiency testing and annual performance competencies. After deemed competent in department, assists leadership with signing off other staff members annual competency.

Completes Continuing Education as required by Lab policy and maintain certification if applicable.

Participates in training of new personnel. Mentors others in skill developments.

-Participates in laboratory projects as assigned to expand knowledge base.

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $27.15per hour - $45.34per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
