Job Summary:

The UW Veterinary Care (UWVC) Kennel Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the small animal kennel, ensuring the hospital maintains the highest standards of cleanliness, and managing staff across various roles, including student employees, kennel staff, and custodial staff. This position is a working manager that includes hands-on responsibilities with managerial oversight to maintain the safety, comfort, and care of all patients in the Small Animal Hospital.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Oversees daily operations of the kennel and cleaning staff within the Small Animal Hospital
- Maintaining hospital cleanliness and sanitation standards, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment for patients, clients, and staff.
- Managing, hiring, onboarding, training, and performance evaluation of student workers, kennel staff, and custodial personnel
- Leading efforts in recruiting and maintaining relationships with area advisors for high school programs such as YAP and Leap.
- Establishing and monitoring staff schedules to ensure all cleaning, maintenance, and operational needs are met in a timely and efficient manner
- Monitoring inventory levels and managing the ordering process for cleaning supplies, equipment, and hospital patient food, ensuring adequate stock levels.
- Ensuring compliance with safety and infection control protocols, including isolation and radiation procedures. This involves regular staff training to ensure adherence to established safety measures.


Responsibilities:
Supervises Animal Care Technicians in animal care procedures and/or performs animal care duties as needed to ensure compliance with animal care regulations, and works collaboratively with partners to support research and instruction.

  • 20% Oversees animal care operations, reporting animal health and welfare concerns to veterinary staff and reporting any equipment failure or facilities problems to the appropriate staff members
  • 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 20% Trains animal care and research staff in appropriate practices and standard operating procedures, and schedules employees to ensure proper staffing
  • 20% Ensures proper stock of animal care items, annual certification of HEPA filtered equipment, and hazardous material signage throughout the lab
  • 10% Administers all university and government policies related to animal care operations and reports matters of research non-compliance to the appropriate authorities
  • 10% Performs duties of Animal Care Technicians such as maintenance and oversight of animal health, performance of tests, animal husbandry, and animal biosafety as needed


Tasks:

  • Establish and maintain a staff schedule to support kennel operations which includes operating rooms, exam rooms, reception areas, kennels, services, etc.
  • Manage and lead recruiting, onboarding, hiring, training, and development of new staff. Ensure that all employees are equipped to preform their roles effectively while fostering a positive environment and contributing to overall org success.
  • Coordinate with high school advisors, parents, and departments to ensure students complete required hours and competency checklists. Lead efforts to offer scheduled learning and shadowing opportunities for students. Organize celebration event.
  • Observe patients under care in kennels and report any concerns to clinician and service.
  • Complete and/or delegate tasks as needed for kennel and custodial coverage
  • Monitors inventory to ensure there is an adequate stock of animal food, bedding, bowls, litter, cleaning supplies, exam room supplies, exam room and other supplies to meet the hospital's needs.
  • Work with campus facility staff as needed on maintenance issues. Help manage unplanned facility disruptions.
  • Assists with the cleaning duties, such as vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, cleaning cages, kennel floors, drains, exam rooms, isolation areas, and the I-131 room. Includes outdoor maintenance tasks such as snow removal, upkeep of disposal stations, etc
  • Serve as the point person for Dane County Humane Society to coordinate animal pickup.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities that align with the hospital's mission and values.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

- Experience in maintenance, cleaning, and operations within an animal hospital or similar environment required
- Demonstrated management or leadership experience in a relevant setting
- Professional experience leading, training, and guiding students
- Previous experience in animal handling preferred


Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday from 6:30am - 3:00pm or 7:00am - 3:30pm

Variable night, holiday, weekend, and on-call shifts as required by the hospital.


Work Type:

Full or Part Time: 80% - 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Good leadership skills and ability to work independently are key traits. Ability to function calmly in stressful situations and to work cooperatively with other people. Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks.
