The Department of Urology at the University of Virginia is seeking a Lab and Research Technician 2 or Lab Specialist (depending on qualifications) to join the lab of Dr. Allison May. This role will support Dr. May's research projects focused on kidney cancer and tumor cell/immune cell interactions in kidney tumors. This position supports clinical and research activities by performing a range of technical duties and specialized procedures in a laboratory setting. Lab and Research Technician 2 supports clinical and research operations by assisting with experiments, performing basic analyses, and maintaining lab equipment and animal care. They help evaluate research methods, support data analysis using statistical software, and may perform minor surgical procedures on small animals. The role includes training support staff, supervising students or volunteers, and aiding in the development of new experimental techniques. Additional duties may include coordinating study subjects and maintaining accurate records. Lab Specialist supports research by applying specialized knowledge of lab methods and equipment specific to Principal Investigators and their studies. They perform complex tests, troubleshoot technical issues, and assist in evaluating research procedures. Responsibilities include analyzing data using statistical software, maintaining detailed reports, and conducting literature reviews. The role may involve small animal surgery and helping instruct academic lab sections on methods and safety. Lab Specialists also train other staff and adapt procedures to meet research needs. Minimum Qualifications: Lab and Research Technician 2: Education: Associate's degree Experience:At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience.Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience Lab Specialist: Education: Bachelor's degree. Experience: 2 years of experience. 4 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree. Additional Position Information: This is a non-exempt level, benefited position. Physical Demands: This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
