Special Note
This is a full-time, overtime exempt position in Residential and Dining Services on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College. This position is an "at-will" appointment, exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules and the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime requirements.
Position Purpose
This position is responsible for the management, coordination, and delivery of a comprehensive Residential Life and Dining Service program. The incumbent oversees the full scope of the program and ensures compliance with college policies. This position is responsible for building and maintaining a department culture and campus partnerships that promote belonging, community, civility, and social responsibility and fostering a vibrant campus climate that is inclusive, equitable, and affirms a diverse learning environment committed to equal opportunity and services for all students. Housing at Evergreen consists of traditional residence halls and apartments and consists of 10 permanent staff and 60 student employees and serves approximately 650 residents by providing on-campus residential living and learning community with dining services and programming.
Nature and Scope
Essential Functions

  • Lead the strategic planning, direction, and assessment of the Residential and Dining Services (RAD) program.
  • Plan and implement long- and short-range goals, including those in support of student learning and development and the College's mission.
  • Responsible for planning and direction for departmental programming and general operations, including residential life, housing facilities in collaboration with Campus Facilities, dining services contract compliance, and administrative services.
  • Serve as department appointing authority, responsible for management, oversight, and leadership of RAD staff, including selection, training coordination, performance evaluations, and supervision of the RAD management team to facilitate the program and meet goals and objectives.
  • Develop, manage, and ensure viability of the self-sustaining RAD operating and reserve budgets; analyze and oversee administration of the complex budget, determine budget priorities, and develop long-range financial plans to support operations, capital projects, programs, reserves, and new initiatives.
  • Partner with the Associate Director in evaluating and reviewing theme/special interest housing, first-year specific needs, student staff recruitment and retention, student staff training initiatives, and recognition efforts.
  • Support curriculum planning for Greener Foundations a 4-credit sequence, over two academic quarters, designed to help new Evergreen students transition successfully to academic and student life.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day supervision and management of the dining services contract that provides comprehensive food service to the Evergreen Olympia campus, including responding to residents with higher-level meal plan issues and appeals, responding to the community about major food service needs/changes, chairing workgroups and committees, managing the development/revision of dining policy and publications, reviewing meal plans, and developing short- and long-term projections for costs of meal plans with the Manager of dining services.
  • Serve on the RAD care team and work collaboratively to provide case management for residential students with medical, mental health, socialization, and/or behavioral needs to ensure access to appropriate support systems and to provide consultation and follow-up services.
  • Provide decision-making and enforcement of department and college policies; uphold and comply with established policies and state and federal laws.
  • Work with RAD and Office of Information Services staff to develop technology initiatives for the department.
  • Serve as liaison with other areas, including other auxiliary operations, to provide consultative leadership and foster collaboration and positive dialogue with diverse faculty, staff, students, and the campus community.
  • Serve on college-wide task forces, work groups, and standing and ad hoc committees as assigned.
  • Serve on the leadership team for the division and contribute to the effective leadership of the Student Engagement, Equity, and Support division, including supporting divisional goals, new initiatives, and emerging issues.
  • Work collaboratively across divisions including but not limited to: Academics, Enrollment Services, Financial Operations, Administrative Operations, Advancement, Marketing and Communications, and President's Office.
  • Serve as policy steward for college policies that apply to Residential Life and Dining Services.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.), virtual meeting programs (Teams and Zoom), resident information and communication systems (StarRez and RoomPact), and case management systems (Advocate).
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, customer service, and public presentation skills.
  • Broad knowledge, skills, and abilities in integrating issues related to residential living programs, dining services and facilities management in a residential college setting.
  • Skill in managing the financial operations of a self-sustaining unit and collaboratively developing long and short-range financial plans to meet the goals of housing and dining auxiliary.
  • Advanced skill and ability in managing large and complex budgets.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply relevant Washington state and federal laws, administrative codes, college policies, and collective bargaining agreements and develop and revise policies that impact student learning and development, retention, and recruitment.
  • Ability to engage with integrity, demonstrate ethical conduct, maintain strict confidentiality, and comply with FERPA.
  • Ability to make decisions in crisis and emergency situations regarding students' welfare.
  • Ability to negotiate, interpret, and implement service contracts, including managing the process for complex multi-year agreements, i.e., the dining contract.
  • Advanced organization, problem solving, project management, and prioritization skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Leadership, Student Personnel Administration, or similar field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible housing, dining services, and/or Student Affairs administrative experience equivalent to the Assistant/Associate Director level or above.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Experience integrating residential living programs, dining services, and/or facilities management.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience managing housing operations in a higher education setting, including staff supervision.
  • Experience in contract negotiations and management.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination.
  • Must be able to work extended hours, especially during June Clean Up, Check-In, Check-Out, and date specific events.
  • Must be able to serve in a rotation to provide after-hours, on-call response for emergencies in RAD.
