We create possibilities that move life and commerce forward

Welcome to Manhattan. Every day, our supply chain commerce technology connects two billion people to 20 billion consumer choices. In the warehouse, on the road and in the store, we make what was once impossible, possible. If you want to tackle complex problems and redefine markets, you've come to the right place.

What kinds of things would I be working on?

Our team runs the Manhattan Government Cloud environment, supporting federal emergency response logistics and providing groceries to military service members stationed around the world. Our Cloud Operations Engineers are responsible for all parts of the cloud environment. We provide enterprise level applications and all the supporting infrastructure - so there is a wide variety of responsibilities. Here are some examples of items you may work on in the first couple of years:

  • Work with AWS engineers to research and implement a new AWS service to replace an existing process or add a new capability.

  • Determine ways to further harden the environment by limiting access or reducing the blast radius from attacks or critical failures.

  • Work with our customers to establish or troubleshoot connectivity between our environment, data centers, and suppliers.

  • Develop a proof of concept using Docker containerization and Amazon EKS for a process currently running on a Linux endpoint.

  • Go deep on complex enterprise tooling like Splunk, Tenable, or Palo Alto to automate, configure, and administer for our environment.

  • Perform data analysis, visualization, and log aggregation.

  • Provide Tier 3 production support to diagnose and resolve critical issues impacting our customers.

  • Write Terraform and Ansible scripts to automate cloud infrastructure deployment and configuration.

  • Analyze resource usage for cost saving opportunities.

  • Create custom dashboards, reports, and alerts to proactively notify our NOC of production issues.

What will I learn to do this job?

We know that Cloud Engineering is a challenging and rapidly developing field. We are looking for new employees excited to quickly learn a wide variety of new skills. To hit the ground running, we put a heavy emphasis on building these skills over the first year. Manhattan provides multiple learning opportunities. These include our extensive online learning platform, technical certifications, vendor specific courses, lab events, and in-person training:

  • AWS certifications such as: Cloud Practitioner, Solutions Architect, Security, and Advanced Networking.

  • Participate in AWS gamedays, hackathons, and IR exercises

  • CompTIA certifications: A+, Network+, Cloud+, Linux+

  • User and administrator level training and certification for OS and our third-party tools such as firewalls, security tooling, SIEM, and IdM

  • Scripting and automation: Python, bash, Ansible, Terraform, AWS CLI, Docker, and container orchestration like Kubernetes

What's next for my Career?

Our goal for new Cloud Engineers is to build a solid foundation for the breadth of technologies that make up cloud environments and operations. This gives the opportunity to grow into multiple short- and long-term career paths:

  • Technical management - coordinate with internal and customer resources for new implementations and production operations

  • Cloud architecture - in-depth design for new capabilities, new environments, and customer integration

  • DevSecOps engineering - pipeline automation and containerization
