Overview
The Department of Buildings and General Services (BGS) is seeking a temporary Utility Mechanic to join our team in the Newport/Derby area. This role offers a variety of hands-on responsibilities, which may include:
This position will work Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, approximately 40 hours per week. Occasional weekend and overtime work may be required. This temporary position is available through September 2025. Successful completion of a background check is required for this position. Who May Apply
This position, BGS Utility Mechanic (Job Requisition #52656), is open to all State employees and external applicants.This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week. Environmental Factors
Duties are performed at state buildings, and may include correctional facilities, where contact with inmates may be anticipated. Incumbents may encounter harassment or hostile behavior and must be able to respond in a calm and professional manner. Must be able to climb ladders, lift weights up to 75 pounds, and work in cramped, wet, or poorly ventilated areas. Plumbing repairs often entail exposure to raw sewage, for which protective clothing must be worn. Work in all types of weather should be anticipated. May require possession of a valid driver's license. May require emergency response to calls outside of regular work hours. Some potential for physical injury may be present. Minimum Qualifications
One (1) year or more in building repair and maintenance work. OR Two (2) years of building custodial work at an independent level that involves experience with equipment. OR Completion of a one year vocational/technical training program in building trades, mechanical repair, or closely related field. Special Requirements
