The Salvation Army Midland Division Headquarters located in St. Louis, Missouri, is looking for a Divisional Service Extension Director. This position is responsible for the fund raising, marketing, management, planning, and implementation of program activities that will benefit the service extension units throughout the Midland Division. The service extension units are to raise funds for emergency social services and disaster responses for people in need. Position supervises service extension unit employees, volunteers and advisory boards, and the service extension support staff.

Essential Functions



  1. Facilitate, develop, coordinate, support, supervise and promote all service extension units.
  2. Develop strategy, financial development outcomes and mission alignment plans for service units as needed.
  3. Communicate and evaluate service extension units on related Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  4. Annually set mutually agreed upon service extension goals for the Division and each unit.
  5. Assist service extension units in setting and meeting achievable goals.
  6. Maintain regular, ongoing contact with each service unit and physically visit service extension centers. Service unit visits are a primary part of this position's duties, which may require over 80% of his/her time out of the office during non-disaster response times.
  7. Coordinate with emergency Disaster Services (EDS) in creating disaster response teams and social services in conforming to National Social Service standards and facilitate/ensure training for volunteers and personnel.
  8. Organize new service units, enhance existing units, and revive inactive units.
  9. In collaboration with DHQ development team, coordinate and oversee service units in grant preparation, e.g., United Way, FEMA, and solicitation of potential funding sources.
  10. Provide marketing and fund-raising counsel to aid service extension units in increasing their effectiveness and abilities to meet their fund-raising goals.
  11. Initiate, receive and respond to service extension correspondence.
  12. Prepare and manage Divisional Service Extension budget.

Minimum Qualifications

Related bachelor's degree with four (4) years' experience in related fields, or other combinations of education and experience with at least one year of supervisory experience. Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, like working with others and support The Salvation Army mission. Must become familiar with all Salvation Army functions and programs supported by service extension. Team player, a self-starter, able to handle several projects at the same time and perform well with minimum supervision. Must demonstrate ability to think independently and exercise sound judgment. Knowledge of donor database software is a plus. Significant travel via automobile is required with some overnight travel. Requires a valid drivers' license and pass The Salvation Army Motor Vehicle Report check.

Physical and Working Conditions:

Duties involve leaving the headquarters site to attend meetings and visit service units. Must be capable of performing the above essential duties in an office environment including using a computer, answering phones, etc. Most work will be indoors in a temperature-controlled environment. However, during a response to a disaster, the work environment will most likely reflect the affected area. Working outdoors will reflect seasonal weather, and the initial response could require intensive manual labor operations.

Employee Status:

Full Time: Normal work hours will be determined with supervisor. However, working additional hours including some weekends may be required.
