Job Description Summary:UCAR is excited to announce the opening for the role of Deputy Chief Human Resources Officer (Deputy CHRO). The critical position will be responsible for ensuring that the department establishes and maintains effective communication with labs and programs and ensures that business needs are addressed in a timely manner. This position develops creative and innovative solutions to address challenges and opportunities that present themselves to the organization and to mitigate existing risk.

This key leadership position will also serve as Title IX Coordinator and senior advisor to the CHRO and is responsible for driving organization-wide listening strategies-including culture surveys and listening sessions-while also overseeing theTalent Acquisition, Talent Development, Strategic Partner, and Employee Relation teams, including guidance of performance management practices. What You Will Do

The Deputy CHRO requires a deep understanding of organizational behavior, change leadership, and workforce strategy and plays a critical leadership role in shaping an engaged and high-performing organizational culture. Below is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.

Strategic Leadership & Organizational Influence

  • Serve as the Deputy CHRO and act with the delegated authority of the CHRO as directed, providing professional and managerial leadership to the CHRO in line with the organization's values of providing support to our internal and external stakeholders.

  • Serve as a key advisor to the CHRO and executive leadership on matters related to organizational culture, talent strategy, and workforce engagement.

  • Lead cross-functional HR initiatives that align with the organization's mission, values, and goals.

  • Represent the HR function in organizational planning and governance forums as needed.

  • Serves as a member of the HR Leadership team to coordinate and ensure excellence in HR strategy, operations, recruitment, and retention, supporting CHRO in leading the HR team, setting priorities, and ensuring alignment across HR functions.

  • Lead the development of the alignment of annual objectives/goals and succession planning processes for all positions within HR, and help employees implement these goals.

  • Ensures the service culture is consistent with organizational values and maintains the highest levels of customer focus and integrity.

  • Develops and maintains effective team processes for communication, constructive debate, conflict resolution, identifying innovation opportunities and joint problem solving.

Culture and Change Leadership

  • Track cultural health through data and engagement metrics, informing continuous improvement.

  • Lead organizational listening strategy, with a focus on culture surveys and listening sessions, critical in capturing the voice of employees to inform culture and engagement efforts.

  • Plan and facilitate listening sessions to gather qualitative feedback on organizational culture and employee experience.

  • Create psychologically safe spaces for open dialogue across all levels of the organization

  • Maintain a pulse on employee sentiment and ensure feedback mechanisms are timely, relevant, and effective.

  • Analyze results from surveys, listening sessions, and exit interviews to identify themes; deliver insights and recommendations for organizational improvement to leadership and monitor long term trends.

  • Stay informed of best practices and innovative approaches in employee listening and culture shaping.

Leadership and Oversight

  • Provide leadership, oversight, and set vision, strategic goals, and success measures for supporting organizational units to the following HR departments: Strategic Partnerships, Talent Acquisition, Talent Learning & Development, Employee Relations, and Performance Management.

Education and Experience:

REQUIRED

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Eight years of related experience

  • -OR- an equivalent combination of education and experience.

DESIRED

  • Master's degree in Business, Human Resources, Organizational Development, or related discipline.

  • Experience in a scientific and technical environment.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

    • Knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations.

    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with managers and colleagues at all levels within the organization.

    • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion and make decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.

    • Detail-oriented (especially with regard to effectively managing and documenting employee relations issues and investigations).

    • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

    • Strong customer mindset.

    • Must be comfortable and confident in an ambiguous, rapidly changing and somewhat unstructured work environment.

    • Demonstrated strong analytical and critical thinking skills; and ability to analyze, summarize and effectively present information

    • Strong ability to work and solve problems independently as well as in a collaborative team.

    • Ability to demonstrate tact diplomacy, and maintain strict confidentiality.

    • Acts with a sense of urgency / bias for action.
