Job Summary

The anticipated duration of this temporary assignment is approximately 8 months.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in collecting brain tumor tissue samples during surgical procedures.
  • Ensure proper handling, labeling, and storage of samples according to lab protocols.
  • Organize and maintain a digital database of collected tissue samples.
  • Implement systematic cataloging for efficient retrieval and analysis.
  • De-identify patient data to ensure privacy and compliance with ethical guidelines.
  • Process and format data for consistency and usability.
  • Maintain accurate records of sample metadata and imaging details.
  • Summarize findings and trends for reporting and collaborative purposes.
  • Upload and share data with research collaborators.
  • Ensure data is accessible and formatted appropriately for external use.
  • Work under the guidance of the Principal Investigator (PI) and postdoctoral researcher.
  • Participate in team meetings and communicate progress regularly.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • High school graduation and three years of laboratory experience, or two years of college, including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and two years of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to lift 30-40 pounds - frozen specimens are in heavy racks.
  • Organization and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Ability to navigate to/from freezer facilities (e.g., Parnassus to Oyster Point in South City).
  • Comfortable with email and accessing information from the internet. Must be able to access temperature monitoring system online remotely from home.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in processing specimens.
  • Experience with human biological specimens - handling and processing.
  • Computer experience with general data entry systems.
