THE POSITION

The Commonwealth Media Services within the Department of General Services is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented college intern to assist with the production of high-quality multimedia content that informs the public about government initiatives and public affairs. This internship contributes to the organization's objectives by capturing and editing video and photography, conducting research, drafting scripts, and managing digital content for broadcast and social media platforms. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Our internship program is intended to provide you with a broad understanding of government operations at the state level. This internship provides weekly opportunities where you will engage with senior leadership across DGS, learning the duties and intricacies of our work. The summer schedule events also include tours of the capitol facilities, Governor's Residence, and a visit to Commonwealth Media Services (CMS) studios. You will be participating in a training session conducted by our leg affairs director to increase your understanding of the complexity of executive and legislative bodies collaboration to improve the lives of Pennsylvanians. As a Commonwealth Media Services Intern, you will have the opportunity to develop skills that align with your future. Work involves:

  • Capturing and editing video footage for news segments, press conferences, and government-related storytelling using professional video editing software
  • Researching topics, drafting scripts and treatments, and preparing interview questions for multimedia projects to ensure accuracy and engaging storytelling
  • Taking high-quality photographs at government events, public announcements, and official engagements; editing images using Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop for publication
  • Assisting with filming, photographing, and managing audio/visual components during live press events, public addresses, and official ceremonies
  • Developing digital content, including short-form videos, photo posts, and news updates, for government social media channels to enhance public engagement
  • Editing and optimizing multimedia content, adds captions, and ensuring compliance with branding and accessibility standards
  • Verifying information for accuracy and transcribing interviews or speeches for documentation and media distribution
  • Organizing and archiving video footage, photographs, and other digital assets for future use in government communications
  • Attending various internal and customer-focused meetings that define the project's scope and KPIs
  • Collaborating with producers, journalists, and digital content creators to develop compelling media pieces that align with the organization's messaging
  • Ensuring all content meets ethical journalism practices, government communication policies, and accessibility guidelines
  • Completing special projects and other duties as required or assigned
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Internship, part-time, June 2025 through August 2025
  • Schedule to be determined later with the selected candidate and the bureau.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. You will be required to report in-office at minimum one day per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in college full-time or part-time for the fall semester pursuing a 2- or 4-year post-secondary education program in Graphic Design, Communications, Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Multimedia Production, Web Design, or Digital Media Marketing/Communication
  • Must be in good academic standing (as defined by a GPA of 2.0 or higher)
  • Must be at least 18 years of age

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
