THE POSITION

The Department of General Services (DGS) is looking for a analytically minded intern, interested in providing direct support for the Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary for Procurement. While completing this program, you will gain practical experience in government operations across procurement, telecommunications, warehousing, and vehicle management. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the organization by assisting with special projects, conducting research, and providing data-driven recommendations to improve DGS policies and procedures. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Our internship program is intended to provide you with a broad understanding of government operations at the state level. This internship provides weekly opportunities where you will engage with senior leadership across DGS, learning the duties and intricacies of our work. The summer schedule events also include tours of the capitol facilities, Governor's Residence, and a visit to Commonwealth Media Services (CMS) studios. You will be participating in a training session conducted by our leg affairs director to increase your understanding of the complexity of executive and legislative bodies collaboration to improve the lives of Pennsylvanians. As a Procurement and Policy Intern, you will have the opportunity to develop skills that align with your future. Work involves:

  • Conducting research on bills and policies related to procurement, telecommunications, warehousing, and vehicle management
  • Drafting memos and reports for senior leadership, summarizing research findings, and providing recommendations
  • Attending meetings with DGS staff and external stakeholders, documenting key discussions and action items
  • Managing and analyzing data related to various business areas, identifying trends and potential areas for improvement
  • Scheduling meetings, organizing documents, and managing correspondence
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of special projects related to the Deputy Secretary's priorities
  • Compiling information and data to support the development of presentations and reports
  • Assisting in the review and analysis of existing procurement and operational procedures
  • Supporting the coordination of communication between different DGS bureaus
  • Developing a brief at the end of the internship identifying a policy or procedure for improvement
  • Formulating data-based recommendations for policy and procedure improvements
  • Assisting in the creation of process flow charts
  • Supporting the tracking of project milestones
  • Assisting in the creation of training documentation
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Internship, part-time, June 2025 through August 2025
  • Schedule to be determined later with the selected candidate and the bureau.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. You will be required to report in-office at minimum one day per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled in college full-time or part-time pursuing a 2- or 4-year degree program related to business, public administration, supply chain management, telecommunications, or any related field.
  • Currently in good academic standing (as defined by a GPA of 2.0 or higher).
  • 18 years or age or older.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Experience with data analysis
  • Knowledge of state and local government processes
  • Ability to travel to Harrisburg when required
  • Strong interest in learning about government operations and public service
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent organizational, research, and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaborative in a team environment
  • Attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills
  • Positive attitude
