Job Summary

This position collaborates with the manager to provide spiritual care and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) leadership. A Spiritual Care Supervisor is a Chaplain, offering spiritual care and supervising other chaplains. Additionally, as a Certified CPE Educator, the position is actively involved in the CPE program, including accreditation. As a supervisor, the person participates in the department's 24/7 variable coverage.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) National Faculty Member within 12 months of hire
  • ACPE Certified Educator Certification
  • Ordination or commissioning by one's faith group to serve as a religious leader and endorsement or official recognition by that faith group to function as a chaplain
  • Master's degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, or equivalent experience
  • Three years of chaplaincy experience
  • Experience in supervising Levels I and II CPE
  • Experience providing spiritual and emotional support to front-line staff, allied health students (as appropriate), and other health care team members.
  • Experience in planning, implementing, and documenting a course of action that may involve patient care and other spiritual care and guidance forms.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams, ensuring the highest quality of care in meeting patients' and families' physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
  • Ability to work with people of diverse ethnicities, lifestyles, spiritual and religious traditions, cultures, ages, and health conditions, and with similarly diverse colleagues on an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Interpersonal skills to work collaboratively, coordinate, and integrate with others throughout the organization.
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, best practices, and regulations involved in providing quality interfaith clinical pastoral care, as well as understanding of the role that spiritual care plays in care coordination and clinical patient care.
  • Demonstrated skills in employee supervision and HR administration
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, changing environment.
  • Solid organizational and customer service skills to structure unit operations and effectively lead assigned staff.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with professional and administrative staff, peers, multidisciplinary team members, management, and outside agencies.
  • Knowledge of spiritual and behavioral counseling techniques and skills to quickly evaluate complex or unusual cases and guide within defined procedures and policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through the critical thinking process.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills to explain spiritual care concepts, actively listen, persuade, advise, and counsel.
  • Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Leadership skills to motivate and inspire staff to improve services.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board Certified Chaplain with any of the following: Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Neshama: The Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), and/or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC)
  • ACPE National Faculty Member
  • Experience as an educational resource person regarding spiritual care and chaplaincy services in a medical setting.
  • Experience in working with local faith/religious/spiritual communities.
  • Experience applying current and dynamic spiritual care understandings into practice with an in-depth knowledge of the professional field.
  • Experience in CPE Accreditation review
  • Experience in a Level 1 trauma center
  • Ability to conceptualize their knowledge, skills and abilities to ensure that spiritual care practices and the CPE program are operationalized in compliance with UC Davis Health and ACPE accreditation.
  • Growing knowledge, skill and ability with computer technology and other electronic devices necessary for spiritual care and the CPE program.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
