Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist I for the Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.
The primary purpose of the Research Teaching Specialist I is to work with the
IFH Data Core be responsible for the management of a medium-sized laboratory area. The position is also responsible for conducting research for faculty and the design and conduct of highly specialized technical research. Technical research involves systematic investigation and analysis of technical issues, processes, and innovations, typically in fields like engineering, science, or technology. It focuses on developing new solutions, improving existing technologies, and gaining a deeper understanding of complex technical problems. This research is often applied and practical, aiming to solve real-world problems it will support initiatives to the internal core involving data analytics to make the date research ready using technical knowledge and methods. Gathering data through methods like experiments, simulations, or surveys, and then analyzing it using statistical or other quantitative techniques.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Meets with the chair, faculty (Principal Investigator) to participate in the establishment of goals and objectives for the laboratory consistent with the budgetary, manpower and policy framework of the department or decision.
- As individual researcher performs complex or novel assignments which often require the development of new or improved techniques and procedures. Establishes performance standards as well as the selection of methodology and instrumentation.
- Synthesizes and presents various research and technical operations independently or as assigned, followed by appropriate reports, recommendations and conclusions. Compiles and presents statistical data with appropriate conclusions and recommendations pertinent to research activity.
- Supervises and provides guidance for full-time junior analysts, students, fellows, lower-level professionals and technicians in analysis, data management, etc. to develop the skills necessary to perform the required functions.
- Ensures that the staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs.
- Advises on the preparation of proposals, formal applications and justifications for grant applications. Steers grant writing and project proposals by detailing anticipated data analysis strategies and potential outcomes.
- Utilizes SAS programming skills to manage and analyze large relational research databases. Executes data management and analysis using SAS or other statistical software, including performing data extractions, cleaning, and integration. Maintains expertise in handling large datasets, including Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance databases, as well as survey data.
- Creates medication use calendars for longitudinal studies by coordinating, managing and linking datasets across multiple sources.
- Drafts and reviews tables, figures, and methods and results sections for research manuscripts and reports and presents analysis results in both written and oral formats. Develop and maintain statistical analysis plans (SAP) and accompany documentation for feasibility and funded studies.

Minimum Education and Experience |
- Ph.D. in a relevant science, or a Master's Degree in a relevant science plus three (3) or more years of related research experience.
- Experience working with healthcare claims data is required.
