Southwest (SWT) Water Group Lead

Mott MacDonald is actively growing its water practice in North America. We are currently seeking a Water Group Lead to help develop work in the Southwest area including California and Texas. We anticipate the candidate's primary office will be in Los Angeles, CA but they will be flexible with their work extending into all of our offices in the target area. You will be tasked with identifying opportunities and helping build Mott MacDonald's presence in the Southwestern United States focused on water-related projects, in close coordination with our operations the Western US and in North America.

As a Group Lead, you will have the opportunity to lead a group of talented Discipline Leaders and support the Division General Manager and Resource Manager in various operational and people related functions.

The successful candidate is expected to be a visible leader within our offices and be an ambassador for the Mott MacDonald brand both internally and externally, prioritizing a positive culture in the face of continued growth within the Unit.

The position offers excellent potential for professional growth and the opportunity to collaborate not only with water resources personnel, but with our many practices including dams, geotechnical, energy, and transportation. The qualified candidate must have strong leadership and program management experience and direct business development experience during their career, with the ability to generate project leads, build client relationships and win work. A primary objective of this position will also involve helping identify viable hire candidates from the area that are seller/doers with strong water sector technical skills and local area relationships that can help grow an area's water sector presence and capability.

This position requires direct interaction with clients and the ability to manage and lead Mott MacDonald professionals. The role will require managing design teams comprising Mott MacDonald's supporting technical disciplines and specialty sub-consultants as well as construction management and planning staff.

Your key responsibilities will include:



  • Developing, in coordination with the current water practice personnel, a growth plan for water in the Southwest area, and implementation of the growth plan.
  • Interacting with clients and regulatory agencies.
  • Client contact, business development, identifying and generating project opportunities.
  • Identify and help attract local area engineering talent to grow the business.
  • Building Mott MacDonald's brand in the target area.
  • Providing leadership/mentoring to technical staff.
  • Communicating effectively and efficiently with team members, clients, and contractors.
  • Preparation of written reports and planning documents.
  • Participation in area trade and engineering societies and associations.
  • Active involvement in area conferences.

  • Creating and maintaining a collaborative and respectful culture that encourages excellence, innovation, and learning
  • Develop and implement strategies to drive growth and improve performance of the Resource Group
  • Providing pastoral care for staff - focusing on health, safety and wellbeing including creating a culture that promotes positive staff engagement
  • Advising on promotion, salary and training of the staff in the Group in consultation with the Resource Manager
  • Managing the Discipline Leads, advising on team structure, and actively mentoring, coaching, and planning for succession
  • Collaborating with other Group leads to maximize the effectiveness of existing resources
  • Managing the utilization of resources in coordination with the Resource Manager (short-term and long-term), including planning and forecasting for critical project and opportunity resourcing
  • Coordinating with the Resource Manager to plan and lead the hiring of new staff - identifying gaps in the team, filling them, and planning for growth in alignment with the Regional strategic objectives
  • Participating in and actively contributing to Divisional operational matters and proactively cascade information regularly from Region/Unit updates



We invite applications from candidates with the following experience:



  • BS in Civil Engineering is required. A Master's Degree is desired.
  • Professional Engineer licensed in California.
  • An ideal candidate will have at least 20 years of experience directly related to the water sector industry preferably in California, experience in Southwest is a plus.
  • The ability to assemble, evaluate, manage and guide project teams is required.
  • Direct experience completing projects in California.
  • Proven experience developing technical work products and programs with proven experience assisting in delivering specific programs.
  • Ability to help develop a response to requests for qualifications with strong technical writing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to speak publicly.
  • Experience in providing technical and project leadership to staff-level or junior engineers.
  • Occasional out-of-town travel will be required.

The expected salary for this position is $250,000 - $300,000

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.
