Overview

Support the Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) Nuclear & Criticality Safety Engineering (N&CSE) organization in the development of emergency preparedness documentation for various nuclear facilities at the Savannah River Site (SRS). As an Emergency Planning Hazard Analyst (SGL 34 - Senior Engineer/Scientist A) primary duties are to participate in the development, preparation, and/or review of All-Hazards Surveys, Emergency Planning Hazards Assessments (EPHAs), and related technical documents. This includes participating in planning and hazards analysis meetings, developing accident analyses using barrier analysis (i.e., failure of engineered barrier, failure of administrative barrier or control), and performing Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) and Emergency Action Level (EAL) evaluations. This also includes performing consequence assessments using the ALOHA, HotSpot, or related computer codes



Responsibilities

    Define scope of technical programs and develop effective and efficient solutions to challenges which involve unique or controversial problems.
  • Routinely use systems and meet all requirements with little supervisory guidance. Assist in teaching newer professionals and guiding their efforts.
  • Incorporate conventional engineering or scientific practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning where only general objectives are stated.
  • Coordinate various phases of the activity and perform development work in assigned field.
  • Define specific problems based on general problem information from management and customers.
  • Plan technical effort and coordinate activities with those of other divisions, departments and sections in focuses areas to solve problems.
  • Ensure compliance with technical requirements of assigned work, proper utilization and training of personnel operating under one's technical guidance, and compliance with approved schedules and staffing estimates.
  • Ensures appropriate technical performance of the end product developed and designed to resolve the original problem.
  • Determine scheduling and staffing requirements for assigned tasks, in collaboration with management.
  • Demonstrate cost and schedule consciousness through timely completion of assigned tasks and projects. Communicate results and objectives verbally and in manuscript form to customers, colleagues and management.
  • Enhance expertise in field through participation in local technical societies.
  • Demonstrate creative ability through medium of patent disclosures, problem solving, engineering reports, technical papers and articles.

Work Hours: Up to a 40-hour work week is scheduled. SRNS utilizes various work schedules including 5/8s (8 hour/day; five days per week), 4/10s (10 hours/day; four days per week), and 9/80s (9 hours/day, four days per week plus 8 hours every other Friday). Except at the discretion of the Manager, the work week excludes SRNS holidays. Each workday has an unpaid 30-minute lunch. Overtime will be expected at times to meet deliverables and will be utilized at the discretion of the Manager.



Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Education: A Ph.D. degree in applicable science or engineering discipline and 2+ years' experience OR a MS with 5+ years' experience OR a BS with 7+ years' experience.

Experience/Skills: Has mastered technical field, is recognized as internal expert, has depth of knowledge to tackle any problem in field.

Additional Experience/Skills:

  • Prior experience providing nuclear safety support to facilities in the Department of Energy (DOE) complex or nuclear industry is required.
  • Previous experience with implementation of DOE O 151.1C/151.1D Comprehensive Emergency Management System and its implementing Guide DOE G 151.1-2 Technical Planning Basis is required.
  • Previous experience authoring EPHAs and developing All-Hazards Surveys is required.
  • Experience in using ALOHA, HotSpot, or related codes is required.
  • Must be a US Citizen
OTHER REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Area Security Access: Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" security clearance. Subcontractor must have an active eFOCI registration

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Candidates who have possessed an active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past two (2) years are preferred.
  • Experience with ALOHA and/or HotSpot is preferred.
  • Previous relevant experience at SRS is preferred.
