Summary:
- The HVAC Mechanic performs skilled work, including installation, repair, modification, and maintenance on various types of light commercial and residential air conditioning and heating equipment. Models and ensures high performance and customer service delivery consistent with the agency's mission, vision, and values.
Role & Responsibilities:

These essential functions require a consistent presence in the work environment on a regular basis, and regular attendance must be maintained.
- Troubleshoots repairs, installs, and maintains a variety of heating and air conditioning equipment.
- Performs electrical checks on three-phase 460-volt A/C equipment.
- Removes pumps and performs routine maintenance work.
- Replace air conditioning filters and pipe insulation.
- Adjusts and calibrates temperature control devices on pneumatic and electronic A/C systems.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections and repairs.
- Installs new equipment within given diagrams, schematics, instructions, prevailing codes, and safety practices.
- Adjusts and maintains controls on heat pump systems.
- Initiates requisitions for parts, supplies, and other related materials necessary to perform scheduled work.
- Utilizes the tools and equipment of the HVAC trade.
- Utilizes blueprints, diagrams, and schematics to troubleshoot, diagnose, and identify operating problems of heating and air conditioning equipment.
- Performs related duties as required.
- General knowledge of HVAC equipment repair, installation, and maintenance procedures, practices and techniques of electronic and pneumatic HVAC control systems.
- Knowledge of the operation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of refrigerators, heating and air-conditioning systems.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures and practices, safe work practices and procedures, principles and practices of HVAC equipment design, pressure charts, gauges, tools, and equipment used in HVAC equipment repair, installation, and maintenance.
- Troubleshoot and repair electronic and pneumatic HVAC control systems.
- Read and interpret refrigeration pressure charts, gauges, temperature humidity meters, and recording equipment.
- Read and interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, and schematics.
- Perform preventive maintenance on large HVAC equipment including cooling towers and boilers.
- Utilize the tools and equipment of the HVAC trade.
- Handle all the physical requirements of the job.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Follow guidelines, regulations, and various manuals.
- Effectively practice safe working habits and follow Opportunity Home requirements for the use of personal protective equipment.
- When HVAC work needs are decreased, the technician assists with other work, such as Make-Readys, work orders, etc.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Complete all duties as assigned or requested as outlined in operational and procedural guidelines. These guidelines are maintained and issued in the event of an emergency situation that arises at a property or any other location that serves our residents or employees.
- Participate in Trauma Informed Care (TIC) initiatives to include training, workgroups, project assignments, etc., that are launched or implemented in order to achieve and/or maintain certification as a TIC organization.
- Recognize the significance of a data-driven organization that adheres to expanded policies and practices in the area of data governance. Learn the distinct and different roles to include: Data Trustees, Data Domain Stewards, Data System Custodians, Data Stewards, and Data Users. Effectively collaborate with the various data roles as needed on a daily basis or in a project capacity.

Education Required:
- High School Diploma or GED.
Experience Required:
- Two (2) years of experience in installing, operating, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.
- Must have the ability to learn and use cloud applications such as the Google GSuite applications, including but not limited to Google Chrome Browser, Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Understand document sharing and collaboration in the cloud. Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, cloud-accessible applications including but not limited to One Drive, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, or MAC or PC desktop equivalent, is acceptable.
- Successful completion of a criminal history background check, education, and work history verification, and drug screening test.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Ability to learn cloud technologies such as Lucid Chart for diagram, workflow and chart drawing. Experience with Vizio or equivalent is acceptable. Basic understanding of Virtual Private Network (VPN) access to connect to internal business systems.
Required License + Certificates:
- EPA Certification or the ability to obtain the EPA certification upon hire.
- Texas Class "C" driver's license at the time of placement and insurable by the organization's fleet and liability insurance carrier.
- Must have the ability to earn certifications as required by assigned tasks.
