Organizational Unit Overview
The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension maintains a full spectrum of clinical services, including management of acute and chronic renal failure, renal transplantation, and hypertension. The division has extensive experience in hemodialysis, all forms of peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy, plasmapheresis (including immunoadsorption), renal biopsy, and immunosuppression management. Nephrology maintains two chronic dialysis units, one on the East Carolina University School of Medicine campus, and the other on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. In addition, the university maintains an active renal transplant program performing approximately 100 transplants per year. Nephrology & Hypertension represents a unit with the attendant responsibility for medical treatment, education, community outreach, and clinical/bench research.
This division cares for approximately 295 chronic dialysis patients with end stage renal failure and offers medical services, including inpatient and outpatient medical services for kidney diseases and disorders, including diagnosis, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, transplant work-up, transplant management, case management and long term follow up. In addition, a Nephrology subspecialty fellowship program is underway. Faculty will be conducting outreach clinics in coastal North Carolina in the future in order to better support underserved eastern North Carolina locations. Teaching responsibilities include daily teaching rounds with house staff, medical students, fellows and didactic lectures/grand rounds for Medicine residents, students and faculty and teaching continuing medical education programs to other health care providers.
The Division of Nephrology is developing its collaborative research efforts. Faculty within the division conduct clinical research including outcomes-based protocols and drug trials, both government and non-government funded. The division is involved in writing and processing NIH grants, basic and/or clinical trials pharmaceutical company supported grants, and non-funded, division-generated clinical research grants. Faculty are involved in a number of organizations, committees and collaborations on a local, national and an international level. This interface demands a complete support group and requires staff competencies in the areas of planning, organization, and communication.
Personnel within the division include 9 MD faculty, 3 physician extenders, 6 fellows, a Nurse Manager/Clinical Administrative Manager, 2 staff nurses, 1 practical nurse, 6 research technician, and 1 medical office assistant. The division plans to add, two faculty and one fellow, within the next two to six months. The division's office space includes approximately 2700 sq. ft. of office suites with seven-eight individual faculty offices, a library, and conference room, reception area and clinic with three to four exam rooms plus patient assessment/lab room.
Clinical research trials within the division have grown in conjunction with the inception of the fellowship program. Initial sponsor-proposed budgets are expected to increase, and the division expects to perform a number of clinical trials on an annual basis. To accomplish this task and provide excellence in patient care, teaching (demonstrated by objective measures), and plan for future growth/development, a highly competent, dedicated and proficient staff member appropriately classified, compensated and trained is need.
Job Duties
This position will maintain a general working knowledge of the programs, services and resources within the medical community, the school, the hospital, the department and the division. The division operations include medical school and residency teaching, support for research development, coordination and implementation of faculty scheduling templates, ancillary service scheduling templates, document preparation, filing and record keeping, authorizing correspondence, communication, internal policies and procedures, facilities/space management within the administrative office, and other organizational and administrative responsibilities. This position exists to: 1) serve as the personal assistant to the Division Chief for Nephrology as well as all physicians and APPs within the unit; (2) coordinate divisional activities (scheduling and daily calendar maintenance, travel arrangements, organization of meetings, maintain monthly call schedule, liaison to Patient Access Services as needed, purchasing clinical and administrative supplies, liaison with pharmaceutical representatives, creation and editing of letters and memos as requested); (3) acts as leave clerk for clinical staff; (4) prepare and distribute attending call schedules.
