JOB TITLE: Phlebotomist

DEPARTMENT: Laboratory

REPORTS TO: Care Delivery Supervisor/Clinic Nurse Manager

DIRECTION OF OTHERS: None

POSITION PURPOSE:

Performs blood draws and fingersticks per provider orders. Performs protime, hemoglobin and glucose testing. Excellence is to be centered on patient care and patient relationships and is the responsibility of all employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:



  1. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  2. Graduate of a phlebotomy program preferred.
  3. One year of recent experience in an accredited laboratory preferred.


POSITION PURPOSE

Performs specimen collections per provider orders. Performs limited testing for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease, in accordance with clinical and governmental standards. Prepares, analyzes, evaluates and documents patient specimens in various departments within the laboratory.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time. Must possess speech, hearing, and sight skills to perform the functions of the position. Manual dexterity is required. Must be able to speak, read and write English proficiently. Some lifting may be required.

ACCOUNTABILITIES



  1. Collect and process biological specimens with appropriate technique following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  2. Perform limited testing analysis and verify assay/analyzer performance according to SOP in an efficient, quality focused, cost-effective manner.
  3. Document and communicate lab test results thoroughly and accurately according to SOP.
  4. Perform and document maintenance procedures and maintain adequate supplies.
  5. Monitors and requests lab supplies to ensure proper inventory and avoid interruption in service.
  6. Demonstrate competency and comply with all regulatory agency policies.
  7. Consistently implement and adhere to the laboratory customer service and patient experience standards. The standards include maintaining confidentiality, promoting teamwork, successful communication and conflict resolution.
  8. Respond proactively to stressful circumstances, customer needs and department/clinic changes.
  9. Demonstrate professional development through participation in continuing education, special projects and community / corporate / professional organizations. Demonstrate personal development through dependability, professional appearance, and cooperative attitude.
  10. Perform other tasks as assigned.
  11. Assists in orientation and training of new personnel as assigned to ensure established procedures are clearly understood and followed. Documents training on the training checklist.
  12. Participates in quality improvement activities, including: analyzing proficiency testing samples, performs and documents quality control.
  13. Prepares test orders and specimens for testing and/or transfer to reference laboratory.
  14. Maintains proper use of standard precautions, protective barriers, use of aseptic technique and disposal of infections/hazardous waste.
  15. Complies with applicable legislation such as OSHA, CLIA and College of America Pathologists standards.


TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Frequent exposure to; communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, bio-hazardous waste and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
