The Department of Music and Visual Arts at Elizabeth City State University ( ECSU) delivers a comprehensive, student-centered education in the creative disciplines, cultivating artistic excellence and innovation across music, visual arts, and digital media. The department's mission is to prepare skilled, knowledgeable, and adaptable artists, musicians, and media professionals capable of creative expression, critical thinking, and effective collaboration in a diverse and technology-driven society.
As part of its continued commitment to academic distinction, the department invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track faculty position as Endowed Distinguished Professor in Graphic Design with an Emphasis on Art History. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping an interdisciplinary curriculum by teaching three courses per semester in art history, graphic design, and related areas, while actively contributing to the department's teaching, scholarship, and service initiatives.
Description of Work
The primary purpose of this position is to provide visionary leadership and excellence in teaching, research, and service within the Visual Arts program at Elizabeth City State University. As the Endowed Distinguished Professor in Graphic Design with an Emphasis on Art History, the faculty member will be responsible for advancing curricular innovation, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations, and elevating the academic profile of the program. The position includes teaching courses in art history, mentoring students, supporting program development, and engaging in scholarly and/or creative activities that reflect a commitment to diversity, contemporary design practice, and historical inquiry. The professor will serve as a key contributor to the department's strategic initiatives, community engagement, and recruitment efforts, helping to prepare students for careers in design and the arts.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
Demonstrated expertise in graphic design with an emphasis on art history, supported by a strong portfolio and/or scholarly publications.

  • Ability to teach a range of art history courses, including art appreciation, modern art, and design history.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard design software, particularly Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Commitment to continued professional and artistic growth in both historical and design-focused practices.
  • Experience with digital platforms such as Adobe Creative Suite, UI/UX, animation, or web-based design is preferred.
  • Proven ability to bridge historical perspectives with contemporary design challenges.


The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following preferred attributes:

  • Evidence of leadership in curriculum development, assessment, and academic planning.
  • Experience mentoring junior faculty, student research, or creative projects.
  • A record of securing grants, fellowships, or external funding to support scholarly or creative endeavors.
  • Willingness to serve as a campus leader in the visual arts, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and community engagement.
  • Familiarity with accreditation standards and program review processes in higher education.

Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative and student-centered approach.
Minimum Training and Experience
Minimum Training and Experience:

* Ph.D. in Art History, or a closely related field
* Evidence of successful college/university-level teaching
* Demonstrated record of creative and/or scholarly achievement
* Strong foundation in art history and design theory
* Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
