Position Overview
The Jayhawk Debate Institute is a summer workshop to prepare high school students for policy debate on the 2024-25 National Speech and Debate Association resolution. Resident Advisors will monitor activities in the dormitory to ensure instruction as well as health and safety of residents and commuter students at the camp. RA's will be available during the day to assist with camp instructional activities, to monitor the camp office, and to transport students to health services as needed. In the evening RA's will plan supplemental educational activities and supervise students on the floors of the dorm where campers are staying. This is a full-time, temporary staff position that begins June 22, 2025, and ends by July 11, 2025.

The successful candidate must be able to listen to and follow directions, and act as an authority figure and give directions to a small group of employees.

  • Oversee the Resident Assistants in the evenings in the dorms for the duration of the JDI.
  • Must live in dorm during JDI.
  • Manage the schedule for assistants ensuring they work their floors each evening and that nightly room check is performed.
  • Supervise campers in the dorms during the evenings, report to the camp director any problems that arise with campers as needed.

25%
  • Assist in the camp office during the day (3 times a week) answering the phone, helping with any camp(er) needs that arise during the day.
  • Judge debates during the camp tournament(s) at the end of the 2nd and 3rd week of the camp during the afternoon rounds.
  • Participate in all camp activities.

Position Requirements
  1. Must have valid driver's license

Required Qualifications
  1. High School diploma or GED
  2. Previous experience supervising high school students, as evidenced by application materials
  3. Previous leadership experience, as evidenced by application materials

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree and/or graduate degree in Communication Studies or a related field
  2. Previous experience in a position that required organizational skills, as evidenced by work history
  3. Previous experience working at a debate camp, as evidenced by work history
